Using the names only, as a gauge, Company I was probably enlisted from the lower part of Greenville County, Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, and Fairview Communities.

Company I was an excellent company. Formed from the lower end of the county where most families were rather up scale for the up-country, it served well. It appears to have no desertions to speak of.

This is my revised roster of Company I, Sixteenth South Carolina. It is drawn from a wide group of sources. There are problems with it. I have attempted to show all men so some duplication is possible. To be noted with the problems are the trouble in telling who is who with the Harrison's and others including the Forrester's.

Of the 167 men of Company I: only 9 were captured; 2 at Missionary Ridge and its attendant actions, 2 at Kennesaw and one each at Franklin, Marietta, Nashville and the place of capture for two is unknown

24 were Killed In Action, 21 Died of Illness, and only 3 died in prisons. Those killed in action died as follows: 8 at Franklin, 4 at Decatur and Kennesaw Mt., 3 at Atlanta, 2 at Missionary Ridge and one at Peachtree Creek and Smithfield, N.C. The place of death for one is unknown.

In addition to the 24 killed, 17 members were wounded, several on multiple occasions. Thus the difference in number of wounds and men wounded. Although it is difficult to see who was wounded at Franklin and who at Nashville, there appear to be 3 at Franklin and none at Nashville, 4 at Decatur, 2 at Atlanta, and one each at Kennesaw, Lovejoy, Car Shop, Missionary Ridge, and Dalton. For 2 men it is not recorded where they were wounded.

There were 29 men present at the surrender. 14 attended the 1883 meeting where the colors were brought from hiding. No member of I Company that was captured, galvanized or fought for the Union. All the men appear to have come from Greenville County. No one is carried as having deserted. I consider I Company one of the better companies of the regiment, certainly it appears to have been one of the most loyal to the southern cause. There is a J.J. McKinsey, Company I, Sixteenth South Carolina listed as buried at Griffin Georgia in the U.D.C. list, Vol 2, page 628. It is possible that this is Newton Mckinney but the U.D.C. information is right after war and is certainly dated.

Company I, Sixteenth South Carolina and Company B, Third State Troops, 6-62 to 1-63

Many of the men from I Company, served in Company B of the Third State Troops from January of 1862 until January of 1863. This unit of State Troops was commanded by Captain T.B. Roberts (Captain, Company A, 16th S.C.V). Numbering with those serving in both units are Thomas Goldsmith, Samuel Mckittrick, W.D. Bramlett, George Fielding, Johnson Goodwin, J.M. Greer, John M. Howard, T.B. Nelson and others. Some would join other units, others would find the way back to the 16th. You will note that almost every surname mentioned in I Company of the Sixteenth is to be found on Bil's roster listed below.

Note: You will leave my site if you follow this link, use your back button to return or bookmark before you leave, we want you to come back.

Related by his daughter Susie Rosetta Forrester, found in the Forrester genealogy.
John Elford Forrester was in the War Between the States as a Confederate soldier. He was captured and imprisoned in Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana. His captors nearly starved him to death. He was a man of about 165 pounds but when he reached home after the war he weighed only about 85 pounds and his hipbones cut through his skin. He was never a well man thereafter. He said that he often thought of his mother’s slop bucket when he was so hungry.

Greetings All:

First of all Steve, I appreciate your informative web site. My father’s ancestral research indicates at least 2 of 4 Vaughan brothers fought with the 16th. Your necrology section confirms this with the exception of the incorrectly spelled last name.

The Vaughan family had settled in or around Fountain Inn, SC during the civil war. Pascal died in Franklin, Tolliver died in Kennesaw Mountain and Henry died in Petersburg (army of VA) or the CSA hospital in Farmville. The family story around Henry was that after months of filth in trench warfare he became agitated and was determined to crawl out of the trench to relief himself. It was his last act of defiance.

The other family story is that my gr/gr/gr/gr grandmother was heartbroken as her boys were "volunteered" to serve. When they came for her youngest she took matters into her own hands. She burned the family bible, which detailed birth dates. Then she lied about the age of her "baby" (his name escapes me) who was small in stature. She told the recruiters that she had given 3 sons to the confederacy and that was enough. And in so many words, get off my property now!

Since that time, generation after generation perpetuated the family name though a single male child. Until my father (Charles Ball Vaughan) moved North in the early 1940's and had two sons, I have two sons, and my brother has one.

The Vaughan’s remain defiant.

I hope this is of some passing interest. Thanks again,

My warmest regards,
Evan Vaughan

I think he is Benjamin William Burdett, son of of Agness Barker and Jesse Bramlett Burdett and husband of Eliza M. Smith. This Benjamin William Burdett was born June 9, 1843, Laurens Co., S.C., or Simpsonville, Greenville Co., S.C., and died Dec. 17, 1936, in Simpsonville. He was buried in McCarter Cemetery, Greenville Co., S.C. I believe he served as a private in Company I, 16th (Greenville) Regiment, SC Infantry, C.S.A., and as a private in Company D, 24th Regiment, SC Infantry, C.S.A. I believe the 16th and the 24th consolidated in 1865.

Benjamin William Burdett is the grandson of Elizabeth Bramlett and Reuben Burdett and great-grandson of Mariann Bramlett and Frederick Burdett. Mariann Bramlett Burdett is the daughter of Margaret and Henry Bramlett Jr. of Fauquier Co., Va. Margaret moved into Laurens Dist., S.C., by 1790. Henry Jr. died in 1780. Mariaann's husband, Frederick Burdett, was in Laurens County by 1775 when he and William Bramlet witnessed a deed there.

(Son of Agness Barker and Jesse Bramlett Burdett and husband of Zelene McPherson, born April 4, 1845, Laurens Co., S.C., or Simpsonville, Greenville Co., S.C., died Dec. 22, 1919, Greenville County, buried Simpsonville City Cemetery.) Other sources: NPS, Martha Anne (Curry) Duke, Franklin D. Burdette. David is grandson of Elizabeth Bramlett and Reuben Burdett and great-grandson of Mariann Bramlett and Frederick Burdett.

It looks like David served in another unit before he enlisted in the 16th at Jackson, Miss., since he was a resident of Greenville Co., S.C. I doubt he traveled clear to Mississippi to join the war effort in 1863. I found some information about a D. Burdit who served in the 7th Regiment in 1862. It's probably David Wilcot Burdett:

Could be D. (DAVID WILCOT) BURDIT, Private, Private, Company K, 7th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, C.S.A.: enlisted Aug. 9, 1862; WIA Sept. 17, 1862, Sharpsburg, Md.; in General Hospital, Culpeper, Va., Sept. 25, 1862; AWOL Nov. 17, 1862 (actually captured?) and never returned to the unit. Regiment assembled Spring 1861 Columbia, S.C., and moved to Virginia in June; after fighting in Bonham¹s Brigade at First Manassas, unit served under Gen. Kershaw, Gen. Kennedy and Gen. Conner, participating in campaigns of Army of Northern Virginia. NARA Index: Burdit D 7 Regt SC Inf Confed K Pvt Pvt Film M381 Roll 5 Record 650.

Died Camp Morton, in my case he was confused with John Elford Forrester and the service records are mixed and difficult to sort. There are certainly two John Forrester's in the 1860 census and two in the combined service records. Other records support this John as being the husband of Serena, including census data.

Looking over some of my records for Spartanburg County CW soldiers and noticed that an M. R. Mahaffey, 16 - I, was receiving a Class A Pension as Paralyzed. He was living in Walnut Grove, Spartanburg County. This was noted in the 1907 Spartanburg County Pension List and printed in the 4/27/1907 Spartanburg Herald. This paralysis probably occured due to his imprisonment at Camp Morton. I show that he died after 1910 and born 5/1/42.

Notice the 16 I roster has a Roland Mahaffey with no additional data. Is it possible that Madison Roland and Roland are the same person?

Did you know that Newton McKinney is also buried-or has a marker- at Clear Springs? It is beside his wife Mary's stone, and hers is way older; his appears to be much newer, maybe replaced or put down in the not too distant past as it is a newer style. I dont know if they brought his body home for burial or if it is a memorial but the plot is in the size of two people buried there. His stone says:

Walter Henry Stewart was the sixth child of John Stewart and Linny Pitts, founders of the House of John. Henry, as he was called, was born in 1826 in the Bethany community in lower Laurens County, SC. He was probably named after his two grandfathers, Walter Stewart, Sr. and Henry Pitts.
As a young man, Henry moved with his parents and the rest of his family to the Fountain Inn area, where his father John died shortly afterwards of a sudden stroke while rebuilding his sawmill on North Durbin Creek. Family tradition says that young Henry ran the sawmill after his father's death, and lived for a time in a little house near the sawmill site about two miles northeast of Fountain Inn. Henry's uncle, 6 Rev. Clark Berry Stewart, notes in his journal that he bought 221 feet of weatherboard for his barn from Henry Stewart in July 1870.
In 1864 he married Tempie Caroline Jones, thought to be the daughter of Margaret McMahon and Moses M. Jones of the Fountain Inn area. After the war Henry served as postmaster of Fountain Inn - probably sometime in the years between 1867 and 1873, according to available post office records for these years. He kept the post office in his home for a time. About 1874 he and Caroline and their young family moved to the Freeman community in upper Greenville County near Travelers Rest, SC, where Henry again served as postmaster. He was Clerk of Session at New Harmony Presbyterian Church until 1874.
Henry and Caroline reared a family of seven children, one of whom died as a child. They were charter members of the Third Presbyterian Church in Greenville, and are buried at Duncan's Chapel Cemetery on Old Buncombe Road north of Greenville.
Many descendants of Caroline Jones and Henry Stewart still live in the Travelers Rest and Greenville area. They meet each year on the fourth Sunday in October for a "Stewart Cousins Reunion" at Reedy River Baptist Church on County Road 88 southwest of Travelers Rest, on the edge of the Furman University Campus. For more information, contact 2641 Frances S. Shepard or 26272 Beulah L. Batson.
Walter Henry Stewart was the father of Walter Claude Stewart who was the father of Gertie Lee Stewart, my mother.

* All the armies of the Confederacy were reorganized in April of 1862. Many officers lost positions and resigned or enlisted in other units. Wm. Faulkner, the Southern writer and Nobel winner, addresses this in Satoris, a novel that is a thinly hidden biography of his grandfather, a Colonel in Confederate Service who lost his position. Most of these men chose to serve in the ranks and more than a few former Captains and Colonels died in those hallowed ranks as private soldiers.
