Some Spacey Help

(see below for last year's conversations)

cvbnmlkjhgfd: hello, this is Cvbnmlkjhgfd, from your honors enviornmental class
eescilsm: hi there
cvbnmlkjhgfd: what do you mean by "Explain why we must rely on em energy to explore beyond our solar system" what is em energy?
eescilsm: electromagnetic energy: radio, roygbiv, xrays etc
cvbnmlkjhgfd: okay, thanks a bunch
eescilsm: so why must we rely on ......
cvbnmlkjhgfd: I dont know i dont understand please help??
eescilsm: how do we use em energy to explore/find out about the universe?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: I know what em energy is but i dont know what it has to do with us exsploring the solar system
eescilsm: how does a telescope work?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: by using mirrors and reflecting and reflacting images back to your eye
cvbnmlkjhgfd: ?
eescilsm: right - and we can do the same with any em energy, not just visible light
cvbnmlkjhgfd: oh i get it- thanks for your help -bye c ya
eescilsm: are you sure?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: positive thanks
eescilsm: why must we rely on em energy only to explore beyond our solar system?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: em energy helps us find the lihgt in space? becuase telescopes help us find the light like with the red and blue shift so is that the same?
eescilsm: so why is em energy the only thing we have to use to find out about what is beyond the solar system?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: i dont know why
eescilsm: what can we use within our solar system?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: i dont know ...what does em energy have t do about finding information about our solar system
eescilsm: telescopes use visible light - that is em radiation, we can also use all the other forms of em radiation to "see" what is going on in the solar system and beyond the solar system. But besides telescopes here at Earth, what can we send within the solar system to find out more than what happens to come to use?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: satellites?
eescilsm: yes - they can go get info - but can we use them to explore the rest of the universe?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: yes..??? i thought we could
eescilsm: how long did it take Magellan to reach Venus?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: it took a year
cvbnmlkjhgfd: ?
eescilsm: and how long did your other spacecraft take to get where they went?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: that took 6 months, half the time
cvbnmlkjhgfd: i did the mars oddessy
eescilsm: so they each went about half an AU in that time - how long would it take for them to go 10 light years?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: 128,000 years?
eescilsm: yep, so can we use them?
cvbnmlkjhgfd: no we cant because it would take to long so we have to use em enerhy to travel that far
eescilsm: we have only the em energy coming to us from there - the better we gather and interpret that energy with telescopes, the more we know - we can only sit here and wait for information to come to us.
cvbnmlkjhgfd: because satellites take to long we must rely on em energy to send us information about our solar system??
cvbnmlkjhgfd: and outside our solar system?
eescilsm: within our solar system we don't have to just wait for what information comes to us, we can go get it
cvbnmlkjhgfd: ok right thats what i ment but outside thats when we use the em enegy right???
eescilsm: right
cvbnmlkjhgfd: okay i so get it thank you so much
eescilsm: but we also use it within our solar system
eescilsm: you're welcome - and Asdfghjkl is welcome too
cvbnmlkjhgfd: o ok ya we were a little stuck thanks
eescilsm: i was "talking" to her at the same time

asdfghjkl: hello this is asdfghjkl from enviromental science
eescilsm: hi there
asdfghjkl: hi....im having trouble with one of the questions
asdfghjkl: Explain why we must rely on em energy to explore beyond our solar system
eescilsm: I'm helping someone else with that right now
asdfghjkl: yeah i was on the phone with cvbnmlkjhgf and i decided to come online myself
eescilsm: do you want to wait and see what we said?
asdfghjkl: well i guess....i just dont know what elecrtomagnetic energy has to do with us studying the solar system
eescilsm: em energy is radio, roybiv, etc that we gather with telescopes
asdfghjkl: yes
eescilsm: telescopes use visible light - that is em radiation, we can also use all the other forms of em radiation to "see" what is going on in the solar system and beyond the solar system. But besides telescopes here at Earth, what can we send within the solar system to find out more than what happens to come to us to use?
asdfghjkl: space shuttles? satellites?
eescilsm: yes, but can we use them beyond the solar system?
asdfghjkl: no....because it is too far away
asdfghjkl: right?
eescilsm: exactly!
eescilsm: so we have no choice but to use what comes to use from other places
asdfghjkl: ok so satellites and telescopes help us see the e.m. energy.....but what does the e.m. energy tell us about the solar system?
eescilsm: everything we know
asdfghjkl: ok
asdfghjkl: i get it
eescilsm: are you sure?
asdfghjkl: i have to go bye....thank you for the help
asdfghjkl: yes im sure
eescilsm: ok, see you tomorrow
asdfghjkl: ok bye
eescilsm: bye

Start with doppler effect - it's what causes red shift - do you understand how the movement of an object causes the change of wavelengths coming from that object?

> > 2. What is em energy??? Explain why we must rely on em energy to explore beyond our solar system???

em stands for electromagnetic - radio through gamma - we cannot go beyond the solar system, so we can only use what comes to us: the em radiation such as light

> > 3. What evidence do you want us to know about the Big Bang Theory?? do you want about the craters that they found that they think was from dinosaur  time???

THE BIG BANG THEORY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH METEORITES!

What do you want to know about these that follow? Please look up what we did in class on these days, try to figure out this stuff from your notes and class/home work, then write back if you still have questions.

specifically, the video compared uniformitarianism with catastophism while comparing how the surface of venus may change with how earth's surface changes

if something is coming toward us, the wavelengths it is giving off are shortened: blue shift. Red shift is the opposite

Ghjkl: hey Mr. Mitchell, it's Klpoiuyt
eescilsm: hi there
Ghjkl: what's up?
eescilsm: i'm e-tutoring
Ghjkl: haha
eescilsm: check out http://www.oocities.org/capeCanaveral/7639/space/help.htm
Ghjkl: ok

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: ok back

eescilsm: check out http://www.fourmilab.to/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth/action?opt= -p for examples

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: ok thanx a lot

eescilsm: ok - finally - look at http://www.oocities.org/capeCanaveral/7639/space/2 7519.jpg and tell me what time of day in CT and the first day of what season

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: it is the first day of either spring or fall and it is around noon

eescilsm: why that day, why that time?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: it is the 1st day of spring cuzthe sun is in both hemishperes and it is noon cuz the whole US isn't lit up yet...am i right/

eescilsm: is the sun equally in both hemispheres?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: yea

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: y am i wrong?

eescilsm: then why is the entire arctic lit up and all of antarctica in the dark?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: oh my bad

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: so then what season is it? summer?

eescilsm: why?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: why do i think that it is summer?

eescilsm: yes - and why that time?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: it is summer cuz the US is lit up and not the southern hemispere and it is noon cuz the whole us isn't lit up yet

eescilsm: the us is lit up in the winter, too

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: yea but the whole N. hemisphere is lit up

eescilsm: if it was noon here, wouldn't the west coast also be in the daylight?

eescilsm: yes, its the first day of summer - whats the date?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: i dunno the date of the 1st day of summer

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: so what time is it like 9 am

eescilsm: find out the date, and actually earlier am - it gets light earlier in the summer

eescilsm: what would it look like on an equinox?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: the middle of the map would be light and the far sides would be dark

eescilsm: compare the lighting of the 2 hemispheres

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: it would be equal wouldn't it/

eescilsm: yep

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: sweet

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: spo the time would be around 7 er so?

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: so*

eescilsm: yep

Mnbvcxzasdfgh: ok thanks

nmlkjhgfdsa: we have a test on thursday right

nmlkjhgfdsa: or wendsday

eescilsm: wed

nmlkjhgfdsa: alrite

eescilsm: anything else?

nmlkjhgfdsa: umm

nmlkjhgfdsa: why do you have aim

eescilsm: so i can do this for my students

nmlkjhgfdsa: oh

nmlkjhgfdsa: wut would you of done if i said bad stuff to you

eescilsm: locked you out, reprimand you tomorrow, call out the im police - the regular stuff

nmlkjhgfdsa: wut do you mean reprimand

eescilsm: i mean YELL AT YOU SO LOUD MY VOICE SQUEAKS

nmlkjhgfdsa: you already did that

eescilsm: oh yea

nmlkjhgfdsa: that was funny

eescilsm: anything i can help you with?

nmlkjhgfdsa: umm

nmlkjhgfdsa: wut are the 2 different telescopes

eescilsm: i almost broke out laughing at myself instead of yelling at you

eescilsm: reflecting and refracting

nmlkjhgfdsa: no

nmlkjhgfdsa: the 2 big ones

eescilsm: the kecks and hubble were what we studied in class

nmlkjhgfdsa: i know

nmlkjhgfdsa: but im no A student

eescilsm: so what are you asking?

nmlkjhgfdsa: ur not being to nice

nmlkjhgfdsa: i think i will warn you

nmlkjhgfdsa: jk

eescilsm: i'm not trying to be mean - i really don't understand what you're asking

nmlkjhgfdsa: oh

nmlkjhgfdsa: is this test hard

eescilsm: not if you know everything
