just FYI, the search programs only show your site if one spells trachenberg with "burg" instead of "berg." luckily, I couldn't spell it. also, bibliofind.com is a great place to lacote used copies of the book.

i,m a geezer;graduated from high school in scotland in '48 where i got a good grounding in math.my teacher was a mr. donald known affectionately as "curly don"a lovable man who made it fun.i never studied math beyond h.s.level but always had a fondness fo it.[incidentally,i later met second year university students here who were learning what i had learned in fourth year h.s.] fast forward a few years to find me reading a copy of esquire mag.in ecstacy because i am learning about this man rachtenburg and his wonderful system.i kept that mag.for years but lost it in one of my many moves.sad. fast forward againto a few months ago when my math teacher daughter and her math/science husband decide that the geeze should get up to speed and they give me a computer and a swift kick.so here i am at your site having had a flash to try "trachtenberg" i spelled it incorrectly the first time and came upon pages for an actress and an accountant.so thanks for the stimulat on.sorry to drag on,but ido tend to become inebriated with the eloquence of my own verbosity.be well. ralph hislop.

I read your exellant site,I will make evry effort to propagate,I allready sent to my 2 sons and 2 of my 7 grand children.your page is NOT wierd. I was 12 or 13 years old(that was 63 years ago) elementary school student,at that time my father worked for Mobil company in Istanbul Turkey,I was born in Turkey but I am Armenian, during summer vacation I spent lots of time at my fathers working place, there I met this interesting person, he was white Russian refugee,he used to amaze me with his very fast solution of multiplication of long (10,15 digits actually he put no limit but the mechanical calculator at the ofice had a limit)numbers,he used to write them one under other (or someone ill arbitrarily write)then draw a line under and start wring the answer allmost immediately and allways correctly, this amazed me so much that, before and after my coming to US for my internship in medecine (1954)I talked about this to anyone with degree in math, engineering etc.Usual y the answer was (in US)he was a gifted person that he can see the answer in his mind !then one day one of my childrens teacher mentioned about Trachtenburg theories but not much more.Trachtenburg name was in my minde since but did no have time to investigate, now that I am retired and Electronic being my hobby since age 8(yes 8 or 9)I build my computers (allmost 20 years)and surfe the net daily.Couple days ago I was cleaning some old notes and here I see Tr chtenburg again today that I had alittle time I searched the internet and VOILA or EURECA I am in your web site vith a Joy I probably will read evrything there is. So long now friend ,your page is not weird but should be a MEKKA for school techers . PS: what is O/S Kirkor Sekercan

Question: Given a rectangular m by n piece of paper with m > n, you want to cut out two largest congruent semicircles from it. How to determine the radius and the location of the centers?

Comments:
I found this problem while reading through a newsgroup. Not sure if solvable yet, probably is though. So far I worked out one (the simpliest =) case -- when m >= 4n, the two semicircles would have a radius of n and their exposed diameter would lie on th m-side of the rectangle and the semicircles tangent to the opposite m-side. BTW, you've got a nice math site! Keep it up and Go Mathies! =) Croolie

Question: I don't mean to burst your bubble, but...

Comments:
The question of 1+1=? when you only have 0 and 1 as possible solutions has already been answered, believe it or not. For the answer to be meaningful, you have to obey certain rules, namely that 1 cannot equal 0. (If 1 ever did equal 0, then every number ould collapse to 0, and mathematics as we even begin to know it would be pretty much nonexistent.) My argument below is pretty much standard from introductory ring theory and modular rings. Given our assumptions and algebra rules, 1+1 cannot properly equal 1 and be meaningful, since we'd get 1=0. Thus, 1+1=0, implying 1=-1 (see an intro abstract algebra text for information about the sign). It's still a neat result, and stuns non-math peopl who've been conditioned to believe 1+1 only equals 2.
