December 14, 2001, met with the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency for mediation of the Racial Profiling complaint.
December 13, 2001, from 11:45am to 12 noon: CBC Radio One, 99.1 FM, aired a program called "Testifying." In Toronto, an African Canadian lawyer brought together five of his colleagues to bear witness to their experiences as Black lawyers including racism in the profession, intense community pressure, and why most of them have decided to stick with it.

November 26, 2001, Madam Justice Chapnick launched publication on mature students at Osgoode Hall Law School. I enjoyed both the dirnner and the speeches.
November 24, 2001, Trial Practice - 361 University Avenue (Pieters and Bobbette Jones against Pierre-Louis Le Saunier). The Judge was Carolyn Horkins. We argued for the plaintiff in Dixon v. Providential Life Insurance Company.

October 03, 2001: The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has granted interested party status to the African Canadian Legal Clinic in Pieters v. Department of National Revenue, the first human rights inquiry into racial discrimination in
Canada's Customs practices, i.e. racial profiling of travellers at
Canada's ports of entry. In granting status to the ACLC the Chairperson of
the CHRT wrote that "While the involvement of the ACLC will inevitably
result in a somewhat longer hearing, in my view, the novelty and the
importance of the issues raised by Mr. Pieters' complaint justify such a
result." Pieters v. Department of National Revenue (Ruling 1).
Hearing dates are set for January 14 - 18, 2002, January 28 - February 01, 2002, February 11 - 15, 2002, February 25 - March 01, 2002.

September 21, 2001: AIDSbeat 2001, the annual bash where the Bay Street legal crowd gets rowdy... Once again, AIDSbeat features five lawyer bands from different firms in a full throttle "battle of the bands" to capture the LEXPERT Cup (judges this year are DEAN PETER HOGG, SHEILA BLOCK and DALE LASTMAN). Throw in a great D.J., hot go-go boys and girls, free food, and let 'er rip.

observe a moment of silence for the victims of the terrorist attacks in the
United States. The gathering will then proceed to The Harry Arthurs Common
where the University will also observe a moment of silence (please see
notice below).

Thursday August 23, 2001, Shank v. University of Toronto: The Superior Court of Ontario has decided that the case of the law students is sufficiently important and complicated to need a panel of three judges! The case is being brought forward by one of the law students sanctioned by Dean Ron Daniels for misrepresenting December practice test marks to law firms.
