The "BUTBUL AFFAIR" (continued)
Israel's Media Watch has petitioned the High Court of Justice
(Mars 1998)

Israel's Media Watch has petitioned the High Court of Justice to halt any promotion of Israel Television's Aaron Goldfinger who was involved in unethically obtaining material to be used against the Israel Broadcasting Authority's plenum member Gabi Butbul.

In a still-secret report presented to IBA's Chairperson, Professor Rina Shapira, Goldfinger, along with Mordechai Kirschenbaum, IBA's Director-General, Yair Stern, ITV's Director and Tzvi Li-Dar, the IBA spokesman, were found guilty of "invalid" actions and in various degrees were all disciplined. However, Prof. Shapira cancelled the summons to a disciplinary board hearing that was scheduled for Goldfinger, despite the fact that he had encouraged an IBA researcher to lie.

The Court is requested, in addition to preventing Goldfinger's advancement, to instruct Prof. Shapira to present all four employees with disciplinary board summonses and to publish the full report authored by advocate Yosef Richter who was appointed upon the recommendation of State Attorney Elyakim Rubinstein.

Together with IMW, additional petitioners include Gabi Butbol, the "B'Tzedek" organization and Likud Young Guard head, Gilad Ardan. Representing the four is Elad Rosenblatt.

The petition has been referred to a three-judge panel and the respondents have been ordered to reply to the petition.

Israel's Media Watch (IMW), Israel's sole public media watchdog group. IMW is a registered non-profit organization whose major aim is assuring the ethical and fair conduct of the Israeli media.
