IBA'S DIRECTOR URI PORAT YIELDS TO PRESSURE
The following text is adapted from Arutz 7
News Service, Tuesday, June 16, 1998 / Sivan 22, 5758
Arutz-7 has learned that Israel Broadcasting
Authority Directory Uri Porat has decided to allow news editors
Natan Guttman and Elisha Spiegelman to retain their
positions. The two wrote Porat a letter of apology,
acknowledging that there had been a measure of
"doctoring" of a particular film clip last month. The
clip, which was aired on the Mabat nightly news show, combined a
scene of a smiling and waving Prime Minister Netanyahu together
with a few seconds of anti-Arab incitement in the background,
giving the false impression that Netanyahu encouraged the
incitement.
Porat's attorney, Chaim Misgav, told Arutz-7 that Porat did
not receive strong backing from the government ministers or from
the Prime Minister in his intention to remove the two editors
from their positions, and that there was terrific
counter-pressure against him.
