Common misconceptions about open adoptions
Here are some very prevalent misconceptions about open adoption.
Misconceptions regarding birthmothers
- You will have an active parenting role in your child's life.
- You will confuse the child with your presence.
- You are trying to have it both ways -- being a parent, but not taking
responsibility.
Misconceptions regarding adoptees
- You will be confused if your birthparents visit you while growing up.
- You will never truly be part of either family, just a shared commodity
between the two.
- You will use your birthparents as ammunition to get what you want from
your adoptive parents (and vice versa).
Misconceptions regarding adoptive parents
- You will be regarded as a "babysitter" to your adopted child.
- You will not have control over making decisions for your child.
- You will have to include the birth family in every aspect of your life.
