Last year the focus was on the role of progressive media in building coalitions and alliances. This year the focus is on youth and media. One of the best kept secrets among media analysts and pundits is the active contributions youth make to their communities families and workplaces. The way the mainstream media tells it crime and violence by youth have our society under siege with communities and individuals cowering in inactive isolation. The subtext of the message sometimes blatant other times subtle is that young people of color are the main perpetrators -- young men of color as violent criminals young women of color as welfare cheats. The favored solution is lock 'em up - or throw 'em out of the country. Rarely represented in the mainstream press are the many contributions of youth or the positive effects of youth cultural innovations and political interventions. Nor do we hear much about the failure of contemporary politics schools and businesses to work with youth to create the necessary social institutions and conditions that allows youth to reach their full potential. But youth aren't sitting around waiting to be noticed. They are actively working for a better future - challenging unfair employment conditions and draconian social spending policies fighting toxic dumping in their neighborhood and exposing corporate crime. The evidence of things not seen* in regular media outlets is being contested by the social actors most affected young people. Spend five days with peers from around the country involved with local media work using media in their political organizing efforts or interested in learning more. It will be an opportunity to discuss the role and character of media and engage in hands-on training in producing alternative pro-active media. No experience is required or bring your expertise to share. The workshops presentations and training exercises will look for the real story behind crime and violence and how to effectively break the silence and distortions of the mass media. In addition to what you'll learn in the workshops and training sessions there will be ample time for the more informal but equally valuable exchanges. Join us for this invaluable exchange of resources and toward the development of a national voice for youth in the media. Discussion and presentation topics: Welfare Reform Homelessness Immigration civil rights/affirmative action prisons and police defining crime/pinpointing its sources Technical workshops: writing and copy editing interviewing techniques on-line research protecting your rights as a journalist publishing and distributing Training exercises: radio program video presentation on-line publishing newsletter/broadside publication Registration and Housing/meals: $160 Registration only: $65 Equal Opportunity Program Travel and housing scholarships are available - write for more information For more information write ISES/CrossRoads P.O.
