Adult Learning

What is lifelong learning? How does the adult learn?
What positive steps can we take to facilitate our learning. The
secret of successful learning is to be ready for
opportunity as it arrives.
Many individuals and organizations do not embrace this concept
and fail to grasp the business opportunities presented by
change, often because individuals are not prepared for it.
There are also occasions when we grasp opportunity with
a mind set of un-readiness. Half hearted efforts lead to
disaster or crisis in the organization, and in our personal efforts.

Lifelong learning requires preparation, continuing improvement of
intellectual or professional knowledge, and recognizing
opportunity. Adult learning is very different from the
traditional classroom training or education. For example,
when an executive attended a learning event, the boss may ask
How was the event, what did you find new and useful?
Normally, what comes to mind is a mish-mash of impressions,
half-recalled disjointed facts, and flashes of
insight. The remainder of the new information may still be
in notes placed on file to study later.

Adult learning often becomes an abstract of ideas. One common
characteristic of adult learning is pre-conceived ideas,
fixed perceptions, and biased attitudes we carry with use
taken from life and/or professional experiences. With our
minds subjected to continuous bombardments of information
and ideas we in the interest of self-protection, subjectively
screen most of them and tuck others away later use. This "later uses" becomes the process of adult learning.

In conclusion, nothing is learned until it is applied by the
learner, to their environment. To continue to learn and grow
in and out of school, home, life, relationships, and the work
place we must open our mind to change. Learning comes
from assigning value to change in every possible
circumstance, and at every stage of our lives, and acting on
the new by application of it within our daily environment.
