BULGARIA

Communist Dictator Todor Zhivkov

Bulgaria after the cold war, is now a free and sovereign nation, free from Soviet Communism. The problem for Bulgaria in the past is that it did not have a home grown "communist revolution", but rather like mos of Eastern Europe, had Communism imposed by the "Soviet allies" who came to "liberate" Bulgaria. Since 1990, this nation has experienced problems after its liberty, like poverty, corruption, and economic slowdown, things which were inherited from Communist times. This was mainly because the old Communist brass was still overall in power, thwarting economic reforms (unlike Poland), thus slowing down Bulgaria´s economy and its entry to the European Union. Fortunately for Bulgaria, the cold blooded dictator Todor Zhivkov died in 1995, sadly unpunished for his crimes against humanity.

The new good news is that since 1996, the center right President has instituted slow economic reforms, which have finally began to flourish, and has reformed most institutions. The Chilean Anti-Communist League was extremely satisfied by the fact that the ex-King of Bulgaria got elected as Prime Minister, the first royal to be elected to office since the communist killers assumed power in Eastern Europe since 1944-1947. This is H.M. King Simeon, called Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha. He is a man of refined culture, who became king of Bulgaria at age 19 and was made to abdicate by the Communists, and had to feel for his life like so many Bulgarians, to Spain. His Simeon II Natioanl Movement, is a nationalist movement, mainly of right-wing forces, who are anti-communist and pro-market. This has already benefitted Bulgaria, as he does not seek personal aims (unfortunately he had to swear allegiance to a republic), but hopefully eventually his inheritant right to the throne will be returned by the people he loves.
