CARSON -- Construction crews have stumbled upon the skeletal remains of
five people believed to be American Indians who lived in the area more than
1,000 years ago.
Workers found bones and a skull with teeth intact Thursday while draining
water from a 60-foot-by-60-foot trench, Arco spokesman Walter Neil said
Saturday.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office determined the bones were more than
1,000 years old and appeared to belong to five humans, Neil said.
The oil company will leave the remains at the site and plans to hire an
archaeologist to help determine if the site is an American Indian burial
ground and if there are more human bones, Neil said.
California law requires that construction work be halted when remains are
found and that the Native American Heritage Commission, an agency that
compiles data on the state's Indian tribes, be notified.
