The Ministers have voted on 31 May 1994 to the acceptance of 13 January of every years as "NATIONAL AVIATION DAY" to the admiration of King Mongkut who had admitted the seeing of the performence of Thai aviators and using the airplanes which were owned by Thais on 13 January 1913.

Backgroup of the National Aviation Day

Aviation in Thailand dated back to 1911, eight years after the Wrights Brothers invented the first aircraft in the world. Foremost among the neighboring countries, Aviation and its industries have flourished in Thailand for over 80 years. Productions of local aircraft for military purposes were successful, but it came to a halt during World War II. Commercial began in 1919 with the carriage of mail throughout the nation. Freight and passenger services were later developed in 1930. Aviation has thrived and contributed much to Thailand's social, economic and security gains.
Though air transportation in Thailand has reachad the level of international recognition, other areas of related activities are less than satisfactory. Maintenance, service and overhaul facilities as well as general aviation activities are underdeveloped in contrast with the modem aviation's obligations to economic, social and security utilities.
Realizaing the importance of aviation and its industries for economic, social and security concerns, the public and private organization, especially the Foundation for the Preservation and Development of Thai Aircraft under His Majesty the King's Patronage and the Royal Thai Air Force, have promulgated the National Aviation Day be marked on 13 January of every years. In the year 1913 on 13 January, His Majesty the King Mongkut graciously presided over the first Thai flight demonstration which was acombined effort of Thai pilots and Thai built aircraft. On that same day, the Aviation Division in the Ministry of Defence was inaugurated. The events were antecedent for today's aviation prosperity. Thus, the cabinet has proclaimed the 13 January of every year National Aviation Day and sponsored the first commemoration with the following objectives : Commemorate King Mongkut's benevolences with regard to Thai aviation.
