Congratulation to Tamarine Tanasugarn

Tamarine Tanasugarn stunned No. 4 seed Iva Majoli with the biggest victory of her career Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, in the third round of the Australian Open 1998, Melbourne, Australia. Tamarine, 20, left the Croatian close to tears after a 6-0, 6-2 triumph that put the Thai player into her first Grand Slam fourth round.
Tamarine was born in Los Angeles in 1977 when her father Virachai owned a Thai restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard. When the restaurant failed, her parents returned to Bangkok. Tamarine was 5 when she left but was already caught in the tennis net. Two sisters and a brother stayed in Los Angeles, but Tamarine was taken back to Thailand.
Tamarine, who carried Thailand's flag into the Olympic Stadium at Atlanta, remains modest about her fame in the country where she spends about three months a year. She is coached by her father, who also travels the circuit with her, keeping a close watch.
Virachai sent Tamarine's older sister to be coached by Pancho Segura in California, then picked up as much as he could from the former coach of Andre Agassi and Jimmy Connors.

Bangkok Post Aug 4, 1998 - Two wins for Tamarine

Despite having to play two matches in one day, Thailand's Tamarine Tansugarn has reached the final qualifying round of the Toshiba Classic.

Now Tamarine, ranked 42 in the world, she has to beat America's Amy Frazier to enter the first round proper.

Because she was delayed in arriving from the Bank of the West Classic where she lost to eventual champion Lindsay Davenport in the quarter-finals, Tamarine was asked to play two matches in one day.

In her first match she comfortably defeated Larissa Cherer of Venezuela 6-1, 6-1.

However the second match against America's Ginger Nielsen was a much tougher affair but Tamarine finally prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Tamarine will be keen to have a good run in the Toshiba Classic as part of her warm-up for the US Open later this month.

Congratulation to Mr. Chuan Leekpai, the 53rd Government of Thailand.

    Mr. Chuan Leekpai
  • 23 SEP 1992 - 19 MAY 1995
  • Congratulation to Democrat leader Chuan Leekpai as the new prime minister, the 53rd Government of Thailand. The Democrat Party claimed it had a clear majority of 208 out of 393 MPs for the nomination of Mr Chuan as the prime minister.
The coalition, however, insisted that the signatures of 12 Prachakorn Thai supporters the Democrats had in hands were not valid because the backing was given without endorsement of Samak Sundaravej, the Prachakorn Thai leader.
Apart from its 123 MPs, the Democrats had the support of Chart Thai (39 MPs), Social Action (20), Solidarity (8), Seritham (4), Palang Dharma (1), Thai Party (1) and 12 out of 18 from Prachakorn Thai.
That left the coalition bloc with 185 - 125 from NAP, 52 from Chart Pattana, four from Prachakorn Thai and two from Muan Chon.
The coalition camp, however, said it also had the signatures of the 12 Prachakorn Thai MPs with it which meant it had gained more support than the Democrat-led alliance and therefore could name Chatichai Choonhavan, the Chart Pattana leader, as the prime minister.
