More About Dreams
A health dream can help someone keep energy levels high during a busy period.
Others have shown that our psyche, that part of ourselves that is aware of everything about us, appears to monitor the exact condition of our body. This is like having our own built in doctor. At a more specific level, our body and health dreams tell us if we have a health problem building up in our system.
Another body image is often foods and eating. These apply to other areas too, but would be worthy of consideration for body issues if difficult to tie to other life issues.
We can also have literal dreams about the body, the psyche will use what it deems necessary to communicate the message to us.
From 1/18/98 RELATIONSHIP DREAMS: The first part of our discussion this morning is about Relationship Dreams, what the are saying to us and how we interpret them. The first thing to do with a relationship dream is the same as all other dreams, ask our self, "how do I feel about this dream? What is my emotional state? Not in the dream, but when I wake up.
Montague Ullman, a psychiatrist and major pioneer in dreams said this, "dreams monitor the struggle to be truly human, to be truly committed to other people. The main focus for us while we are awake is separateness and individuality. While we sleep, there's a shift of focus to the more basic state of our relatedness to others.
From 2/8/98 Male/female Rebalancing:The psychologist Carl Jung was one of the first to discuss how each male and female contains traits of the opposite sex,
which needed to be integrated into who we are. Thus when appropriate, a man needs to be able to express his feminine qualities such as
gentleness, sensitivity, and nurturing. If he cannot, he becomes overbearing, tyrannical, and antisocial. A woman needs to be able to use
masculine qualities of initiative and self assertion. If she cannot she becomes overly dependent, lacks confidence, and is anxious about life.
Those who can call upon any trait feel happier, having better relationships, and tend to cope better in life.
We recognize a male-female rebalancing dream by the appearance of an opposite-sex figure as a main character in the
dream which Jung called the "animus" and the "anima" the first being the male and the later being the female. The animus is the essence of the male in the female's dream, while the anima is the female essence in a man's dream.
Because we are always growing and changing, such opposite-sex traits need to be rebalanced once in awhile. Assertiveness is a positive trait in a woman, but if she becomes too aggressive, it defeats her purposes by alienating
others. Tenderness in a man is highly desirable, but if he becomes so sentimental that his emotions get in the way of what he is trying to
accomplish, he is taken on too much of a good thing. Balance and perspective is always the key. This is one of the more difficult areas of dreams to understand, although very reasonable if we see dreams as presenting
both negative and positive messages about our current life,,,the dream presents material in a way that the psyche is able to interpret it,
and then the conscious mind can make the necessary adjustments. For either sex, the opposite-sex figure can also be a stranger such as a movie star, or a politician, or it can be an
archetypal figure such as a priestess or a wise old man,,but it is always someone we greatly respect and admire.
And then there are the multiple opposite-sex figures, This can come as a dream in several parts, with a different
central figure in each one, or a single dream can contain several figures, which each play out a trait, or reflecting a different intensity of
the same trait your are wanting to rebalance.
Always remember, all dreams have a theme, the same is true with Relationship Dreams. What am I feeling, would perhaps reflect how I'm feeling about a particular relationship or relationships in general. Remember, we have to find the theme, and then the area of life it applies to. Perhaps I'm having a problem with a particular relationship, or it may be I'm either satisfied or dissatisfied relationships in general.
Remember, (also) dreams are always specific to the individual doing the dreaming, (they) may have some universal application, but always specific to the individual doing the dreaming.
