Italian Vexillogy

The first tricolored "Italian" flag was adopted by the Cispadane Republic, under Napoleonic rule, on January 1797. The stripes were layered horizontally with the republican arms in the middle.

1798-1805
Under the Napoleonic rule, the Cisalpine Republic (Repubblica Cisalpina) began using the now-known-as Italian flag.

1848-1946
The flag, with the Savoy arms on the white strip first becomes the flag of the Kingdom of Sardinia (Regno di Sardegna, meaning Piedmont and Sardinia), and later (1861) the National Flag of the Kingdom of Italy.

1851-1946
The official state flag established by decree in 1851 is the same as the national flag of the Kingdom of Italy except for a crown above the Savoy arms. It was used by public institutions, public offices, and the armed forces. Also on this page you will find the words and music of the old Royal Anthem of the Kingdom of Italy (Marcia Reale) that was used until 1946.

1946-present
The present flag is used, without any arms, from the now-born Italian Republic. The flag has been used since June 19, 1946, but it became the official flag since January 1, 1948.

A more complete discussion of Italian flags may be found in the Italian Flag Gallery of the Italian Centre of Vaxillogical Studies.
