PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

One of my most enjoyable functions, as president of the civic association, is to welcome visitors to Historic Sailboat Bend.  the first and only historic residential district in Fort Lauderdale.  We are, in fact, the birth place of the city of Fort Lauderdale.

Our civic association was founded in 1980 by a group of residents whose goal was to transform Sailboat Bend into a safer, wholesome community.  We have worked closely with our elected officials to ensue the quality of life in our neighborhood, and Sailboat Bend was designated historic in 1992.

Residents take pride in maintaining the beauty and quality of their neighborhood.  Every year we hold a house and garden tour and invite the public to enjoy with us our treasure of historic homes and historic sites.  Yet, we welcome the development of Riverwalk, the Performing Arts Center and the Museum of Discovery and Science as elements of diversification which make Sailboat Bend a desirable place to live.

Former City Commissioner Jack Latona summed it all up in this statement:  "People who care about their past are more likely to care about the future of the community as well."
