BOSTON-NEW ENGLAND FAMILY
The first boss of the New England Family was Gaspare Messina, he ruled from 1916-1924. Philip Buccola then became boss and engrossed the family with lucrative rackets liike loansharking, numbers, and bootlegging. Phil died many years later at the age of 101, having been retired from the mob since 1954. The man who took over after Buccola is the most well-known of the New Englang bosses, Raymond Patriarca, Sr. Right at the first, Patriarca moved the family headquarters from Boston,Mass. to Providence, Rhode Island. He fanned out all up and down New England, making millions each year in loansharking, hijacking, and gambling. Patriarca ordered his underboss, Jerry Angiulo, to take care of operations in Boston while the headquarters was in Providence. Angiulo managed the rackets and sent Patriarca his tribute. Patriarca died in 1984, while serving time on a conspiracy charge to kill Rocco Desiglio. His son, Raymond Patriarca, Jr., became the new boss, and with him came new problems. Many of the members fo the family didnot think highly of Raymond Jr. His underboss William Grosso was killed shortly after he took over as boss. In 1989, Jr. and several other high ranking members were recored by the FBI during a La Cosa Nostra induction ceremony. Jr. is is serving eight years for racketeering charges that he plead guilty to in 1991. Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemmi became boss. Two years ago he was indicted on Rico charges. Pretty recently members of the New England family along with members from the Gambino, Buffalo, and Los Angeles families were being investigated for the murder of Herbie Blitztein.
