I have read every word of your story from your childhood in Texas until Basil returned home. It is absolutely fascinating. I especially enjoyed the insights on Roosevent. I had no idea about the devastation his policies wreaked on farmers. What an awf l tragedy. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you," right? I grew up very poor, but very proud. I remember taking water biscuits to school and hiding in the bathroom to eat them so the other kids wouldn't laugh at me. But it would NEVER had occurred to us to accept free lunches. I think the reason so many people suffer self-esteem problems is that they relinquish their responsibility for taking care of themselves. When you can stand up and look the world in the eye and know that you made i on your own no matter how hard it was, it instills a pride and self-confidence that no one can ever diminish. Basil e-mailed me and mentioned your granddaughter--in my letter back to him, I called her his daughter. Please assure him that I got it straight! By the way, your photos are wonderful. You and Basil were a very good looking couple! Thanks for the wonderful, wonderful memories!

Thank you so much for putting your war time memories on the net. I am trying to get my Mom to write hers this winter and will add them to my Dad's page One thing I'm wondering was where you were when you knew the war had ended, and what was your reaction and the reactions of those around you? My Mom was in New York City walking down a street with 2 of her friends, one of whom had lost her husband to the war. Of course, rumors had been circulating that the end was near. Mom said they suddenly heard bells ringing all over the place and they kne immediately what had happened. They went into a church across the street and knelt and thanked God. Once again, thanks for writing your memoirs.
