Road Safety: Drowsy Driving

Information to prevent falling asleep at the wheel

Falling asleep at the wheel results in hundreds of deaths and injuries in Australia each year.

Driving while drowsy in not illegal. Indeed long drives complying with unreasonably slow speed limits may well contribute. However it is vital that drivers stop immediately and take a break if they exhibit any of the following signs.

Yawning
Eyes sore or heavy
'seeing things'
Reactions seem slow
Driving speed creeps down
Car wanders over the centre-line or onto the road edge
(this is not an exhaustive list)

Tips for avoiding drowsiness

Have a good night's sleep before a long trip.
Don't drink-drive.
Take regular breaks. Get out of the car and walk around.
Eat properly if at all possible.
Coffee, music, or fresh air won't necessarily keep you awake.
Share driving if possible with someone who observes the above

And remember Speed Kills!
