Britain set to copy Australia's neglect of road safety

The British government has announced plans to emulate the Australian approach to speed enforcement. They are considering the acquisition of a large number of speed cameras and considering setting speed limits significantly below the international standard (the 85th percentile).

This ignores the fact that Australia's road safety record is appalling due to focussing one of the smallest causes of traffic accidents - 'speeding' - and Britain has maintained a low road death rate.

Decades of research show that setting speed limits below the optimal level increases the number of traffic accidents. However the British government seems to be willing to ignore this and risk a major increase in road deaths by copying Australian revenue raising.

If Britain takes this approach how many other governments will copy and put money before human life?
