-Before driving, make sure that tyres, brakes and windscreen wipers are in good condition and that you add anti-freeze to the radiator.
-Keep adequate blankets or sleeping bags in the car.
-Use brakes as little as possible- most skids are caused by braking. Since avoiding braking is an aim, be very speed conscious. Plan ahead for curves and maintain a very long distance from other cars. Naturally if it is necessary to brake do so and do so as smoothly as possible.
-Steer as smoothely as possible.
-Use low gear going down hill as much as possible rather than braking. Use higher gear when going uphill as over-revving can cause wheel slip. Change gears smoothely, with engine speed the same as wheel speed.
-Park as far off the road as sensibly possible if visibility becomes too restricted.
-Turn on lights if it is snowing but avoid high beam as it reflects off the falling snow thus restricting your visibility.
