Heart Matters Chapter One:

"And that’s a homerun for Metcalf…" The announcer rattled on. The stadium was filled to capacity as Jeff ran around the bases with the winning run. Coming home his eyes caught a glimpse of a mysterious girl in the stands, looking straight into his eyes. Something about her was familiar, but no, she couldn’t be who he thought she was. He hadn’t seen her in four years or more.

The Indians had won, thanks to Jeff’s winning run. Leaving the stadium he was bombarded by numerous fans, asking for autographs. He never really liked that part of his profession. He’d play ball in an empty stadium, just as long as there were nine men on his team and nine men on the other.

"Can I have your autograph?" A shy, 8-year old girl approached him. After he signed he was looking down at the ground, wondering about the mysterious girl he had seen.

"Too late for an autograph?" Jeff lifted his head to see the girl.

He realized that it was in fact who he thought it was, and despite himself, he cracked a smile, "It’ll cost you."

"I’ll bet my bottom dollar, it’d be worth it." She smiled brightly at him.

An awkward silence followed, "So how you been?"

"If you mean am I married no." She informed him.

"I didn’t ask that." He insisted.

"But you were thinking it." She glared at him.

"You never were one for small talk were you?" He smiled again.

"You ready?" The voice came from behind her.

"Oh, Arthur Schillib, this is Jeff Metcalf… my childhood sweetheart." The girl introduced.

"Nice to meet you." Jeff polietly shook Arthur’s hand.

"We have to go, my train leaves in less than an hour." Arthur pointed out.

"Here." The woman handed him a bag, "Take this back to the car and I’ll be there in a minute.."

"Ok." Arthur pecked her on the cheek and flashed a phony grin before disappearing.

"Tomorrow: same time, same place." With that said she skipped away, leaving a nostalgic Jeff behind.

"Ginger!" He called after her, unheard.
