NCC M16S1 Invitational Shoot '98

This year, NCC once again invited us to the annual National Cadet Corps (NCC) M16S1 Invitational Shoot which was held on 26th November 1998 at the Singapore Armed Forces Nee Soon Camp 100m Range. Just like the previous year, NCC had warmly extended the Invitational Shoot to NPCC HQ and other uniformed organisations to participate in the event. The competition was held for officers to compete against each other and pit their proficiency in their marksmanship in the shooting of the M16 rifle amongst the uniformed organisations.

So NPCC HQ sent a team to compete in this year’s event hoping to repeat the feat achieved by the previous team in 1997. Coincidentally, the team of 4 shooters which represented NPCC HQ comprised mainly of NUS-NPCC Unit’s members. The team was chosen by our newly appointed Adjutant Insp Liew who accompanied us to the event and even took part in the individual event. This was certainly encouraging and morale boosting.

Members of the NPCC team (names as stated below) already had knowledge in the handling of the M16S1 assault rifles, thanks to their 2½ years stint with the Army. However, the team members were still required to undergo a quick lesson on the technical handling of the weapons for safety reasons. Before the start of the competition, Insp Liew as his usual calm self, gave the team some words of encouragement. In fact, the NPCC HQ team shooters were all proficient in their M16 shooting and nothing could stopped them except a better team of shooters to come by.

As expected, the teams that entered the finals fought valiantly and nobody expected NPCC HQ to win the competition again. The other finalist, SATs, sent a team of proficient shooters (marksman) and was certainly no easy meat. The SATs team had ‘seasoned’ shooters and looked confident. Our teams fought hard during the finals and it was extremely competitive. Nonetheless, NPCC HQ team of shooters prevailed! They weathered the storm and came in champions again for another year running. Can you believe it, we won by a mere 1 sec and that separated the 1st and 2nd placings. It actually showed the level of competitiveness and standard of the competition.

In the end, signs of relief were detected among our NPCC HQ ‘snipers’ when the competition was over. All were happy and glad to have done NPCC HQ proud once again. For the record, NPCC HQ won both the individual and team event. The clean sweep certainly spoke volumes for the shooters and NPCC shooting standards. Let’s look forward to the coming competition in 1999 and I am sure NPCC HQ will try their utmost best to defend the crown.

Three cheers for the team shooters and our team manager Insp Liew, who have done NPCC proud!
