On April 26, 1960, the Gamma Sigma chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota National Professional Music Fraternity was installed at Union University. This fraternity installation was brought about largely due to the efforts of Mrs. Elizabeth J. Fossey and with the consent and promise of assistance from Dr. John Hughes, head of the Music Department. SAI alumna, Margaret Roberson, of the Union music faculty, also aided in bringing SAI to Union University.

At the time of installation, Mrs. Fossey was awarded the Sword of Honor. Gamma Sigma's first president was Mary Ann Baker. Charter members were Mary Ann Baker, Polly Stone, Carolyn Townsend, Patty Harrington, Mary D. Sherbenous, Schelley Highsmith, Linda Smith, Wanda Boyd, Joyce Stevenson, Donna Pearson, Ann Coughlan, Mary S. Hudson, Meridith Smith, and Mrs. Frederic Lubrani.
