The vision of PHI BETA SIGMA was made know to Hon. Bro. Morse and Brown by the Hon. Bro. A. Langston Taylor in October of 1913. The three founders selected nine fellow students at Howard University to take part in the formulation of a NEW fraternity on campus. PHI BETA SIGMA was the result of that vision. The fraternity was founded upon the principles of Brotherhood, Service & Scholarship and was exemplified in our fraternity motto, "Culture for Service, Service for Humanity". Through our three National Programs: Bigger & Better Business, Social Action and Education, Phi Beta Sigma has remained a constant force in the upliftment and enlightment of the African-American Community. Throughout the 20th century SIGMA has veen at the forefront of crucial issues that impact minorities in this country. During the 30's and 40's, it was PHI BETA SIGMA that played an integral role in the establishment of National and Local Anti-Lynching Legislation. During the 50's and 60's it was PHI BETA SIGMA that was at the forefront in the fight against racial discrimination and segregation in all levels of municipal employment. In 1995 it was PHI BETA SIGMA who not only just supported the Million Man March in Washington, DC, but opened up its National Headquarters to serve as a control center for the entire event.
Today PHI BETA SIGMA continues to address the
important, crucial issues that face our people. Our motto for the 21st
century: "Focusing on Issues that Imact the African-American Male" is one
that exemplifies our true goal to enrich the lives of minorities on a world-wide
scale. Through several national initiatives SIGMA brothers continue to
keep that focus. Our Sigma Beta Clubs of America, a mentoring program that
has helped to mold and shape thousands of young men nationwide continues
to be one of our proudest accomplishments. Our collegiate chapters continue
the tradiditon of campus leadership at colleges and universities across
the country, a tradition that was first set forth by our esteemed founders.
