AUGUST 21st MEETING - 9:00 A.M. - CROFTON LIBRARY
Welcome new members of class of 2003 and all current and alumni members
to the
new Academy year! The Parents Association motto is Sumus Vobiscum,
We Are With
You! If at any time we can help you in any way, please do not
hesitate to
contact one of the board members of the chapter. We encourage
everyone to
attend the regular parents meetings, and especially jot down upcoming
dates on
your calendars and support the chapter events. Generally speaking,
getting to
chapter activities is a "hike" for all of us since our chapter takes
in a
4-state area. We really try to pick central locations and we
really guarantee
the fun and support you will give and receive will be well worth the
drive!
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION BEGINS
Attached is a 1999-2000 registration form. Please complete this
form and send
it in with your dues check to Roni Briese, Treasurer. Annual
dues fund the
operating expenses of the Chapter with a portion allocated for Cadet
Enrichment.
Please consider sending in an extra donation with your dues which will
be used
to fund cadet events supported in our area. We hope that all
parents of active
cadets and graduates become active dues-paying members of C&P Chapter.
If your
sons and daughters have graduated, congratulation to you, and we ask
you to
remember the value they and you have received by continuing your support
of the
tradition and activities of this chapter. Dues-paying members
will remain on
the mailing list. The success of our chapter is and has been
based on past
experiences, present goals and projects and future ideas and focus.
Thanks in
advance!
C&P Chapter Mission
Our Mission, simply stated, is to support our cadets in any way that
we can,
while also providing a framework of support for their parents.
One of the ways
in which we accomplish this is to support cadet organizations that
visit the
area, such as sports teams and musical groups. We get out to
cheer them on,
provide food and sometimes lodging, and give them a sense of "home
away from
home." Another vital activity is fundraising by our Ways &
Means Committee.
These funds are used solely to support various needs of the corps of
cadets. In
recent years, the group has contributed several "liberty vans"
to the to the
Academy, annual academic award, and annual funding for the cadet video
locker.
There are also several social activities for parents in addition to
our regular
business meetings, including Annual Chapter Dinner to honor the new
parents and
a Holiday Luncheon & Silent Auction.
ALUMNI PARENTS: You are a very important and growing group of
parents for C&P.
To this, the active cadet parents especially say, please stay with
us. You are
a distinguished group who have established and inspired the valuable
chapter
work.
CLASS OF 1999 PARENTS: Congratulations as you now join the ranks
of alumni
parents to our chapter. We've heard some recounts from your graduation
week and
it sure sounds like '99 went out in style. Please maintain your
status with the
chapter especially through your continued membership which
will also provide a
way of keeping up on news of the academy and cadets and parents your
son or
daughter know and have been a part of their training.
CLASS OF 2000 PARENTS: This year ahead promises to be the most
prideful,
Firstie year. Your membership and participation in chapter activities
will
provide the support and leadership so helpful and needed to the chapter
officers
and underclass parents.
Let's go out together and with lots of fun!
CLASS OF 2001 PARENTS: Your cadre cadets will be busier than ever
and as you
watch them step up in leadership responsibilities, so you, too. will
find it
helpful and rewarding to provide the additional support at home and
in our
chapter. That's very evident by your leadership on the Board
of this Chapter.
You're a terrific group-stay with it!
CLASS OF 2002 PARENTS: It's with relief we know that you watch
your cadets
start this 2nd year, but it's not as easy as you think. You will
find their
academics get tougher and there's so much difference from last year's
strict
oversight that it's almost missed. Here is the time to get more
involved in the
chapter and participate in our activities. C&P continues
to seek increased
involvement by your class and hopes that this year will get you at
to meetings
and events.
CLASS OF 2003 PARENTS: Last but by no means the least. As
you can see, there
are many ahead of you on our chapter's roster, but no one class is
more
important than the other. You are C&P's biggest, newest group.
We are here for
you. We want you to join us, join in, and that way we can help
you the best.
By you getting active, getting involved, we all will guarantee that
you will
receive back two-fold or more.
THAT'S EVERYBODY! THERE'S A LOT MORE TO SAY...
PLEASE START WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIP!!
PARENTS WEEKEND - EARLIER THIS YEAR
Hopefully you've made your reservations for the earlier September 24-26,
parents
weekend at the Academy. Activities start mid-day on Friday and
go through
Weekend. The Academy hopes that the earlier weekend will provide
better weather
than some past year have encountered. Help will be needed as
usual manning the
chapter table in Leamy Hall. Please sign up to help an hour or
two. It's a
great way to meet folks from really around the entire country and help
serve C&P
chapter. For '03 parents, this is a great way to start your participation
by
working with the upper-class parents. Also, you'll hear us talk
about the
tickets needed for cadet/parents events and your cadet will be able
to order and
purchase these tickets through their "white card". You just need
to be sure to
let your cadets know how many tickets are needed ahead of time so they
can place
the orders in advance when they are asked. Ask other parents
about this.
Parents w/e will be discussed at the August 21st parents meeting at
Crofton
Library.

NEW "Cake Lady" - Jot down the name of the CGOSA Cake Lady for ordering
cakes
for your cadets during the year. Her name is Marcia Walz and
she can be reached
at 860-464-1078.
C&P Chapter Welcomes Class of 2003 - Welcome Reception
Well attended and supported. The C&P Chapter hosted a welcoming
reception for
incoming cadets at the Radisson on July 5th. The families and
appointees
enjoyed getting acquainted and meeting others in the "same boat."
Survival
guides were distributed to those in attendance who had not already
received one.
There were appointees on the sign-in sheet from as far away as Nova
Scotia,
Nairobi, Hawaii, California, New Mexico and Florida. The Cake
Ladies of the
CGOSA did an outstanding job with the baked goodies for the event.
About 250
people attended the reception, a great representation of the 2003 Class
which
numbered at Swearing-in about 323. Everyone seemed to enjoy the
evening for the
purpose which it is intended. The C&P members on hand received
many thank-yous
from both parents and cadets, including thank yous repeated on R-Day.
Thanks!
to Anne/Jack Walker, Roni Briese, Joanne Venturella, Denise/Ed LaRue,
Pat/Dave
Gamble and Barbara/Charles Banks for representing C&P. A
good time was had by
all because of your great effort!
R-Day Class of 2003
It was a very, very HOT day for the 323 appointees and families in
New London on
July 6th, Swearing-in Day. Some events had to be modified due
to the extreme
heat. An afternoon loss of electricity deprived families of a
cool spot to
await the ceremony. In spite of the heat, the Swabs and Cadre
looked very sharp
on the field at 5:30 p.m. It was a very beautiful and moving
ceremony. As Mary
and Gerry Queen said, "The parting moments brought back memories of
two years
ago when we left our cadet on R-Day." The new cadets then marched
off to
"enjoy" their first Academy dinner and being Swab Summer. C&P
Chapter table was
well attended in Leamy Hall and sales of merchandise brisk in the morning.
The
new Nantucket Basket jewelry was very well received. Thanks to
our C&P
Welcoming contingent again for handling the many parental questions
and pitfalls
during the day and special thanks to the Gambles and Walkers for transporting
the Chapter's inventory to/from the Academy. Good luck Class
of 2003. We
really do encourage you to keep in touch and communicate with others
who are in
your class and who have experienced the 4/c year.

Get Well Wishes to Allie Zumwaldt '02 -
C&P sends Allie our best wishes and
prayers for a speedy recovery from a fall suffered on EAGLE on July
5th. She
was treated for a broken ankle and injured hand. Allie's mom,
Susan Young, told
us that prognosis is good for recovery, crutches for about six weeks
and some
physical therapy after that. All the best, Allie!
