BISMILLAH.......

This page will cover my brief autobiography as a Muslim.

In high school (my senior year), I took a Black Studies course. In this class, we learned about the same brothers and sisters that we hear about every February. As a matter of fact, this was a time before Martin L. King, Jr.'s birthday was recognized as a national holiday. I can remember that the only thing that we heard about Malcolm X was that he changed his last name to "X" because he was "against the system".   Actually, the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad gave him (and all other members of the Nation of Islam [2 include Muhammad Ali--the former boxer] an "X", which represents several unknown characteristics). It was a few years later (after visiting that same school teacher) that she said that there's so much more to Black studies that she couldn't teach us because of the restrictive curriculum guidelines.

It wasn't until 1985 (4 years later) while attending Towson State University, that I actually heard of the Nation of Islam and Min. Louis Farrakhan. There was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha named Sherwood Davis who had just transferred from Frostburg State College. He was talking to as many sisters and brothers that would listen to him. I can even remember debating with him.

A year later, a sister (who used to run track with my wife and me and was now in the Nation) invited my wife to hear Min. Farrakhan at the Paladium in Baltimore. Though I don't remember the message given by the Minister, I can remember how respectful the brothers were toward us. You can usually feel the leader if you feel the followers. But we still weren't ready to commit to the Nation of Islam at that time.

In 1990 my wife met a brother at work and he encouraged her to attend the sister's class. Being curious as to what she is becoming involved, I began attending the brother's class. I wasn't "lookin' for a religion". I'd been in the Baptist church for 26 years, but Islam and the teachings of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad seemed so right and on time. I didn't make arrangements in time to make Saviours' Day in Detroit, but my wife made it. That's been the only Saviours' Day celebration that I've missed. On February 10, 1991, both my wife and I registered in the Nation of Islam. Hey!! Isn't it true that "the family that prays together, stays together"?? (-:

At that time, I lived in Baltimore and attended Muhammad Mosque Number Six. We later moved back to Prince George's Co. (MD) in the D.C. metro area and transferred to Muhammad Mosque Number 4 - Washington, D.C.

During Saviour's Day 1996, The Honorable Min. Louis Farrakhan blessed all of those registered member in attendance with the name "Muhammad". All praise is due 2 Allàh!! Since then, I have been striving hard 2 live up 2 the high ideals and standards of that name. Since I'm still active and evolving and learning more and more about Islam, I will add to this page as necessary.
