* the term "Leatherneck" used as a nickname for US Marines was created during the Spanish American War, because the soldiers wore leather straps around their necks so that when they were sleeping Filipinos could not cut off their heads with their Bolos...

* If not already, by the year 2000, Filipinos will have the highest Asian population in America, surpassing the Chinese...

* Filipinos have the highest rates of drop outs and AIDS among Asian groups in America...

* NBC skipped the Philippine National Team and Representatives during the opening ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta for an overhead view of the stadium from a blimp... the only traces of Filipino presence was during the shot of the next country and echoing in the background were the cheers and proclamations of the Tagalog word, "Mabuhay."

* before the arrival of the Spanish, some tribes in the Philippines had egalitarian societies where both men and women were equal. For example, women were able to fight during combat. Also, some societies were close to being matriarchal, which meant that women had power in the village, or tribe.

The Philippine Flag

The Meaning
SUNBURST and LIGHT RAYS... they represent the first eight provinces which revolted against Spain
THREE STARS... they represent the three largest Islands of the Philippines, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao
WHITE TRIANGLE... this represents equality
the BLUE... this represents Peace,Truth and Justice
the RED... this represents Patriotism and Valor (and WAR if the flag is hoisted with the red stripe on top)...
The flag was officially hoisted for the first time in public in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898, the day the Philippines officially declared its independence from Spain...
