This is the summit crater of the volcano viewed from
the very peak, Columbia Crest, at 14,411'. The rim of the crater remains free of snow due to steam vents. Just because it's not blowing its top does not mean that it is not alive. I actually saw steam myself. This picture is
facing east. The line going across the 1/4 mile crater is the path that most climbers take. We entered the crater from the
east, walked across to sign the book for those that make it, and
made the last short climb to the top where we were greeted with strong winds.
