September 1: Bruny wins Bellinzona in 10.06, Bailey fourth

Today Bruny Surin easily led a mediocre field to the line in the 100m in Bellinzona, Switzerland. Fellow Canadian and Training partner Donovan Bailey finished back in a dissapointing fourth with a 10.32 clocking, the 10.32 was Donovan's second best legal time of 1999. His best came back on August 8 in Cologne where he ran 10.3

August 30: Bruny's season winding down, Bellinzona on Wednesday
What a successful season Bruny has had; Personal bests in the 100 and 200... 5 Sub10's and a Silver medal at the world championships, tying the national record. Bruny only has three more races for 1999... Wednesday in Bellinzona, Switzerland, Friday in Brussels and Tuesday the 7th in Berlin. Before his season ends his goals are to run 9.9 and break Atlee Mahorn's Canadian 200m record of 20.17. The last time Bruny's season went into mid September was 1995, where he also won a Silver medal at Worlds and that too was a pre-olympic year. Next year Bruny's season will go into late September as the 2000 Olympic Games are in Sydney, Australia from September 15- October 1

The meet coming up in Bellinzona, "Gran Premio dei Castelli" will feature
Donovan Bailey, Bruny Surin , Antonio Pettigrew, Colin Jackson, Duane Ross, Zhanna Pintusevich, Deon Hemmings, Hanne Haugland and Heike Drechsler. The men's 100m will take place at 8:30pm, Suisse time which is 1:30 eastern. Please leave your comments in the Message Board
August 30: Surin rips into Bailey

Refuses to accept blame for relay team's disqualification
DAVE STUBBS
The Gazette

Montreal sprinter Bruny Surin, the second-fastest man on Earth, should be reveling today in the joyful emotions of a job superbly done at the world track and field championships in Spain.

Instead, waves of anger and betrayal are crashing from his every pore, and he's not about to allow erstwhile global sprint king Donovan Bailey, or anyone else, to hang the hat of blame on him for Canada's stunning relay disqualification Saturday night in Seville.

August 29: Maurice Greene wins third gold in fastest 4x100m in history
The United States had great handoffs and tremendous leg speed in winning the 4x100m Gold Medal at the 1999 World Championships in the 5th fastest time in history of 37.59. Britain came second in a European record of 37.73 erasing the 1993 mark set by Colin Jackson, Tony Jarrett, John Regis and Linford Christie of 37.77. The Nigerians took bronze in a NR of 37.91 and Brazil finished fourth in a South American record of 38.05.

Jon Drummond had the lead as he had a clean exchange with Tim Montgomery while the Brits stuggled and played catch up the whole way. Off the final exchange Dwain Chambers of Britain had the lead but Greene over took him for a clear metre and half victory. Results are on the left. Congrats to the US team of Jon Drummond, Tim Montgomery, Brian Lewis and Maurice Greene.

The final would of been that much greater with Canada ...

PURE DISSAPOINTMENT
The Canadian team of Donovan Bailey, Glenroy Gilbert, Trevino Betty and Bruny Surin have been disqualified from the 4x100m relay competition in the 1999 World Championships. There was a miscue between Gilbert and Betty when they were exchanging the baton durin the first sem-final. Canada finished in third, but we're quickly disqualifed. The Americans went on to win in 38.06... This is a truly dissapointing moment for team Canada and all there fans, In all 7 teams we're disqualified in the semi-finals. August 28: Surin high on Greene (not so much on Boldon)
SEVILLE, Spain (AP) -- Canada's Bruny Surin, second to double
world champion Maurice Greene in the 100-meter final, rates his American rival above any sprinter in history.
"In the 100, I think he's even stronger than Carl Lewis," said Surin, who's idolized the eight-time world champion his entire life. "When Maurice runs poorly, he runs 9.90."

August 28: Brits, U.S. gunning for Canucks
SEVILLE, Spain -- And now, back to As the Team Turns, brought to you by baton broadcasting.

The latest on the soap opera that is the Canadian men's 4x100-metre relay team, has longtime anchor Donovan Bailey grudgingly accepting his new role as leadoff man for the semi-finals today, after yielding the anchor to the new stud, Bruny Surin.

August 27: 200m at Worlds - PhenoMOnal
Maurice Greene completed the 100/200 World Championship double in Seville by winning the 200m in 19.90, his fastest of the year against a field without World Champion Ato Boldon and the two fastest 200m runners in history Michael Johnson and Frank Fredericks, who pulled out of the final with a nagging hamstring injury. Brazil's Pan-American Games Champion Claudinei Da Silva won silver in a PB of 20.00, followed by 20 year old Nigerian Francis Obikwelu who ran a blistering 19.84 in the semi-final.
August 27: Bailey drops anchor - Winning relay formula out, Surin in
SEVILLE, Spain -- Bruny Surin has proved that he is lightning-fast and yesterday it looked as though he pulled a fast one on the Canadian men's relay team.

Surin coolly announced he would anchor the 4x100-metre team at the world track and field championships, at least for Sunday's final, with Donovan Bailey leading off.

August 26: Rankings, Week #6... New addition to page
We are well into the seventh edition of Track and Field's World Championships and well into the outdoor season, Week 6 of my Sprint Rankings are up and here are the latest moves:

-Greene strengthens his lead at #1 again with World Championship Gold
-Surin with 3 sub10's, including a 9.84 during the World's moves to second
-Ato Boldon dropped to #3 being out of action
-Dwain Chambers moves up to 4th with a Bronze in Seville
-Tim Harden and Tim Montgomery are back in the top ten at #7 and 10 r

The new addition to this page was suggested by a few visitors who thought it would be fitting for this page to have a message board. I decided it would be a good idea and now fans will have a place where they can talk about Bruny Surin and the World of Track and Field. I hope this board will be as succesful as other boards about Track that are on the net. Enjoy!
August 26: Relay Role Reversal?
Surin making noises about taking anchor from Bailey

SEVILLE, Spain -- All six members of the Canadian men's 4x100-metre relay team practised together for the first time yesterday, although there are rumblings that not all is hunky-dory.
There are rumours Bruny Surin, who stunned the track world with his silver-medal time of 9.84 seconds in the 100-metre final Sunday, wants to move from his traditional third leg on the team to the more glamorous anchor position in the relay event at the world track championships.

August 23: Lots of Bruny Surin news
Bruny will have to become the Canadian record holder in the 100, 200 and 4x100m another day because he will not contest the 200 in Seville. Bruny felt sick after his 9.84 Silver medal performance in Seville and wants to rest up for the relay where he will defend his World title with team Canada. I wish Bruny all the best in recovering.

You can listen to a press conference of Bruny Surin and Maurice Greene from after the 100m Final in Seville.

Here's a part of a Toronto Sun Article titled "Silver could land sprinter a pot of gold":
--Bruny Surin's spectacular time does more than just bump up his bottom line. It opens doors. Meet directors will bend over backward to have him race. And there are still a few big races left in the season, including Brussels (Sept.3), Berlin (Sept.7) and the Grand Prix Final in Munich (Sept.11). Surin and Donovan Bailey also are expected to race Sept. 1 in Bellinzone, Switzerland.-- The article can be found in the

August 22: Greene wins Gold in 9.8, Surin ties National Record for Silver
Bruny Surin is the second fastest man EVER. Bruny won his semi-final heat at the World Championships in Seville Sunday in a time of 9.96. His sixth sub 10 run of his career and fourth of 1999. Maurice Greene won the first Semi-Final in the same time. The semi winners clashed in the final, World's Fastest man Greene in 5, Surin in 6. Bruny got off to the best start and was leading Greene until about the 60m mark where Greene pulled ahead and won in 9.80, .01 off the World Record despite a great push by Surin, who won Silver in a PB/National Record time of 9.84!!

This was Bruny's second silver medal in the event, as he won the medal in 1995 behind now co-national record holder Donovan Bailey. Bailey, who was doing commentating for CBC was thrilled with the performance which makes Bruny and Donovan the second fastest men ever in the World. 9.84=Canada. Bruny is also the first man to reach 5 World Championship finals, he has done so in every championship since Tokyo'91

Bruny deserved the honour more than any man. I am overwhelmed and thrilled for Bruny. He did it. Three times under 10 seconds in two days, this has been the meet of Bruny's life even with the 200 and 4x100 to go. I am thrilled, Congratulations Bruny!
August 21: Heats of 100 metres in Seville
Bruny is on his game.

Surin won his opening heat on Saturday in a time of 10.18, fastest of the first round, beating Briton Darren Campbell by a good 2 metres. Bruny had a great start and eased up nicely. Tim Harden of the US posted 10.18 as well in winning heat 8. WR Holder Maurice Greene had no problems advancing in 10.3

Surin & Greene we're lined up next to eachother in Round 2. Greene had a slight lead all the way threw and both eased up at the line as Bruny and Maurice exchanged glances. Maurice won the race 9.91 to 9.95, the 9.95 clocking was Bruny's third best of his career. Obadele Thompson and Jason Gardener shared the second best qualifying time in 10.04.

Surin lines up against Tim Harden, Thompson, Gardener, Leonard Myles-Mills, Davidson Ezinwa and Brian Lewis in the second semi-final tommorow. Bruny looks sharp!

August 11: Bruny will run 200 at Seville
Bruny Surin will contest the 200 metres in Seville at The Worlds and launch an assault on Atlee Mahorn's eight year National Record of 20.17. He had the following comments on his webpage, surin.com after the Weltklasse meet:

"Je suis en forme et récemment j'ai fait ma meilleure performance sur 200 mètres avec un chrono de 20,29 secondes. Je suis conscient que je peux aller beaucoup plus vite que ça, alors j'ai décidé de participer à l'épreuve!"

Which means he is in form, recently he did a personal best over 200m with 20.29. He feels confident he can go much faster which is why he has decided to run.
August 11: Ato Boldon and Donovan Bailey pull out of Zurich and Seville
Ato Boldon announced he will not compete at the upcoming World Championships from August 21-29 in Seville, Spain. Boldon is pulling out because of nagging leg problems and feels he is not ready to compete in the 100 or 200

Donovan Bailey announced on his site that meets like Weltklasse and Worlds are not a place to line up unless your 100% ready, and he is obviously not. He will however still defend the 4x100m Gold medal with team Canada
August 10: Another Johnson vs. Bailey??
Ben Johnson has challenged Donovan Bailey to a match race over 100m, he also invited sprinters like Bruny Surin. Ben wants it in Winnipeg, because he feels Donovan let the city down at the Pan-American Games.

The world record holder's performance was all the more impressive for his disappointing start which saw him in fourth place at the halfway mark. Briton Dwain Chambers was third in 10.04 but Olympic champion Donovan Bailey struggled home in last place.

August 4: Christie suspended for failing drug test
LONDON (AP-CP) -- Linford Christie, the 100-metre champion at the 1992 Olympics, was suspended today for failing a drug test. August 3: Dennis The Menace Gone
Dennis Mitchell, one of the world's best sprinters, received a two-year ban Tuesday for a failed drug test but will be eligible to run in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Track and field's governing body said his drug test from 16 months ago showed high levels of testosterone. The IAAF arbitration panel ruled that Mitchell, the 100-meter bronze medalist in the 1992 Olympics and two-time bronze medalist at the world championships, had no right of appeal.

"He has always been against the use of drugs in track and field," lawyer Suja Thomas said from New York. "This is truly a severe disappointment to him."
A call to Mitchell in Florida was answered by his wife, who said he was not home. Mitchell ran Monday in Malmo, Sweden. Mitchell will be ineligible from April 1, 1998, until March 31, 2000. Any performances by him during that period are "null and void."

Dennis will not run in Seville. The current US 100m Team is: Maurice Greene, Brian Lewis, Tim Montgomery and Tim Harden.

Dennis will not be in this page's 100m Rankings until his ban is over. The next Rankings are on Thursday, August 5th.

Bruny Surin and Canada 4x100m are now Gold Medalists from the 1998 Goodwill Games.

July 23: Injury could sideline Gilbert
Glenroy Gilbert was handed the opportunity to defend his Pan-Am Games 100-metre championship by Donovan Bailey's refusal to run. But now he faces the possibility of having to pass on it himself because of injury.

The 30-year-old from Ottawa, the surprise gold medallist in 1995, said Thursday a stretched groin suffered in Flagstaff, Ariz. last weekend may not allow him to run the 100-metre heats Saturday.

"I'm not sure how bad it is," Gilbert said of the injury he suffered during relay practice Sunday in Flagstaff when he came off the turn into the straight-away and lost his footing on the wet track. "I'll get into Winnipeg and have the doctor look at it and make a decision then."

Gilbert became Canada's second 100-metre entrant, alongside Brad McCuaig of Calgary, after Bruny Surin elected to pass on the Pan-Am Games to compete in Europe.

Bailey, the Olympic champion recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, turned down the invitation to run, saying he was insulted by not being named in the first place. If Gilbert can't run, then McCuaig would be Canada's only runner because no one else ran the required standard time of 10.20 seconds.
