VANCOUVER (CP) -- The 1998 NHL all-star game already has a slick logo
that features a maple leaf star bursting between two hockey sticks.
The blue- and brown-based logo was unveiled Wednesday during a news
conference at GM Place, where the game will be played Jan. 18.
"The logo is meant to convey nationalism, the event and local flavor,"
said John Chapple, president and CEO of Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, owner
of the Vancouver Canucks.
The first NHL all-star game in Vancouver was 20 years ago at the
Pacific Coliseum when the Wales Conference won 4-3 over the Campbell Conference
on a late goal by Richard Martin of the Buffalo Sabres.
The last NHL all-star game held in Canada was in 1993 at Montreal.
"This event is a celebration of the great athletes in our game," said
Canucks GM Pat Quinn. "It has grown in stature over the years."
The logo was created as an adaptation of motifs found in West Coast
native art.
