Jon's Cycling page

Cycling has been a significant part of my cross-training since at least 1996.

I can remember going for long rides around and beyond Mullewa as a 9 year old, and probably many other times.
Doing paper rounds around the hills of Armadale on my bike in the late 80's was one example.
I used the money from one of those paper-rounds to upgrade my bike to a better model.

When I got back problems in 1996, I started doing some 60min plus rides on the exercise bike at the gym.

In 2000/2001/2002/2003/2004, cycling was one of the best options available given my knee problems. Plus a bike was important for my exploration of triathlon in 1998, and 2002...
In 2001-2003 cycling was a very large component of my training,
with my longest ride being an 84km one from Joondalup through Burns Beach to Cottesloe and back in December 2003....Have done my Joondalup to Swanbourne SAS and back 73km course every couple of months in 2004.

In 2003/2004 I have cycled pretty much every day, ranging from a quick 5-20km before work,
to several longer 30km-60km rides each week...
October 2003~~>December 2004 my speedo says I have done about 7500km...

Added a speedo to my mountain-bike in October 2003, and reached a max. speed of 62km/h on a downhill one day.
Was very useful for measuring distances, and the average speed function was a good way to keep me motivated to keep attacking the whole way...In 2004 I added a powerful light to my bike, which allows me to complete night rides. Have used this extensively.

*******Went mountain biking on some of the Munda Biddi trail with two friends in April 2003, and did a 36km coast ride with SP in November 2003.
In April 2004, three of us (minus JA this time) returned to the Munda Biddi to find that elusive POW camp, and this time (29km of gravel, and breakneck bush tracks later, which took 150min, at an average speed of around 17km/h) we returned to Jarrahdale victorious. Very interesting place to visit!
*******June 2004 went mountainbiking at "breakneck" speeds along some steep, rough, gravel tracks on the Carinyah trail and Munda Biddi trail while at a friends birthday gathering.
*******July 10th 2004 cycled 39km into city and along south Perth foreshore with SP.
*******December 13th 2004; cycled 39km in just under 2hrs from Edgewater to Kewdale where I was working, including some big hills at a fast pace.
In the evening after work I rode back that way again, another 39km. Carried a rather heavy bag on my back both ways...
*******March 20th 2005; 30km Freeway Bikehike 67min 51 secs. See my 2005 BLOG for a full report.
*******March 28th 2005; Rode 36km off-road and up and down some steep! hills on gravel tracks with CW, SPe,SPr,Rc. Almost 4 hours we spent out there. Beautiful views! on the Munda Biddi, and at Serpentine Dam. We had frequent drinks breaks, which was important especially with the high levels of humidity. A truly UTG! incredible! ride. :-)

Did many, many rides over 30km since 2004, some of the main ones after 2005;
****February 21st 2006 Darling Scarp adventure challenge ride see here(ggl)...
****April 19th 2006 A 50km ride on Roe Hwy see here and here((ggle)...
****April 27th 2006 A 52km ride on Tonkin Highway see here...
******March 18th 2007 30km Freeway Bikehike 65min 51 secs See my Blog for full report.
(Actually rode about 55km this day, as I rode from home to the start of this ride, and back again.)

In October/November 2003 I went cycling with a friend from church a few times, which was fun. We covered over 20km on a "suncoast" ride, and also alongside the lake. See photos of Perth from Kings Park on one of those rides below.

Got a mountain-bike from Bike Force to do some triathlons beginning of 2002. See photos below after Quinns Triathlon.
