The Cross-Training Influence.

* Due to the large amount of swim sessions
(since Jon couldn't run or racewalk with the knee injuries he had for 7.5 months of the year)
the distance covered in training is a lot less during 2000,
as swimming is the slowest of the above forms of movement,
and there are other limitations to it as well.
Swimming has proved particularly useful in managing
Jon's back injury, and of course its very useful for rehab of knees also, as is cycling!

Jon probably needs to train over 200 hours a year, to be competitive nationally.
Preferably around 500hours or more per year, to compete nationally, internationally.
Getting my injuries properly rehabilitated/managed and avoiding any new injury problems
is one of the keys to getting the minutes training area to where it should be.
Ideally I should be averaging at least 230min per week (200hours per year), and preferably
more like 400-600min per week. This isn't that hard to do for a few weeks,
as I have had many weeks(when I was able to racewalk), when my total training and racing time
was in the 300-500min range for that week,
(particularly when I was training for the 50km in 1998 and 1999).
However, I don't maintain it consistently throughout the year enough.
I guestimate the best racewalkers in the world(i.e. AIS etc)
are averaging well over 600min per week, and probably as much as 1200-1500min per week
in their heavy weeks, not including weights and other stuff they do.

Jon would need to have a more stable financial position, as it costs over $1500 a year to travel to the east coast of Australia 2-3 times a year for badly needed competition. The alternative is to move there as many others have done. However Jon's injury and other issues would need to be resolved now also. Stable employment is one critical issue. Knee injuries and ongoing management of back injury, loneliness are some of the other issues. Of course the question is how important is this anyway. See here...and here
Anyway its fun to think about it.

Some of the barriers are lack of finances, lack of training group/OR/training partners,
injuries, illness and lack of competition or motivation. (For example one of the major reasons for me losing motivation to train and race during much of 1999 was because I couldn't find the money to get to Nationals in March 1999, which mean't no significant competition until December that year, although the Aust Uni Games 5km in September was fun.)

The NEW CROSSTRAINING "REGIME".

Its time for lots of cycling, swimming, and some running until I get my right knee fixed. Then re-evaluate things. Eventually get left knee acl fixed. Consider possibility of further racewalking??? after right knee is fixed or maybe wait for left knee as well, or perhaps dont continue with racewalking?Hope to have both knees fixed before 2006.

2nd July 2001; My knee injuries have changed the focus and modes of my training a lot in 2001.
I am still looking for some fun races to compete in (see "Races" below), but they are short ones, and the focus is more on maintaining fitness, having fun and a little challenge here and there. The plan is to try and keep a sub 50 RHR most weeks, (sub 55 best RHR every week), and to concentrate on increasing the number of sessions per week mainly.
Data page 1 shows that I was successful in improving in that regard to over 4 sessions per week in 2001.

[Racewalking is totally out until the right knee is fixed, and rehabbed. The left knee is a bit of an unknown there but I am hoping it will be ok. Besides, I feel I have done a lot there, so I wouldnt return to competitive racewalking unless I was confident of challenging my P.B.'s, as I see no point in racewalking again with a club otherwise. ]
If I return to serious competitive! racing, again my easy training will give me a reasonable physiological and psychological base to build from, which is better than doing nothing and getting unmotivated and really! unfit. If I get serious! again it will probably be some time in the next 5-8 years, and my training volume (time) will need to increase a lot!

Managing my knee injuries, and the required surgery is something that has been a big factor in the last 6-7 months, and will probably continue to be to varying extents for 6-18 months or longer. As of 2/7/01 the one knee is looking good (apart from the still torn ACL, which probably will require surgery in the next few years), and the other knee is also holding up pretty well (although surgery on that one is something I hope to do before the end of 2001), the minor inflammation issues with running seem to be quelled by regular use of ice-packs.
2002 a very successful year. Major improvement, did what I wanted to do and a little more.
Improved pretty much everything. Doing the triathlons at the beginning of the year was great!
My 21min58 5km, 17min25 CitytoSurf 4km, and 45min54 10km were some good efforts. Also great to be running track again.
Have got the cycling/running mix pretty well right overall for the year, so much so that with my muscles getting stronger,
I rarely had to ice the knees after the first few months. Am not far off the level of fitness I was at in 1997.
My long distance stuff probably is not as good, after all most of my longer sessions are around the 90min mark, whereas in 1997 they were more like 180min.
On the basis of the RHR indicator alone, I am the fittest I have been, although I know that is not the only indicator.
Hopefully at some stage in 2003 I can increase the intensity of my short work to the level;
I had in early 1998 (when I ran a 41min01 10km, and racewalked 13min20 3km, and 1hr46min 20km), while maintaining the increased number of training sessions and time spent training.
If I do that, my RHR should drop through the floor into the sub 45 zone regularly, and I'll see some huge P.B.'s in whatever I do.
To do that I have to try to 1. avoid anymore injury complications, 2. get the job/money stuff, (and social stuff?,) more under control, and 3. Most importantly be more in step with my Creator and Saviour....Those 3 areas...
