Born in 1974 I have lived in Western Australia all my life, Became a Christian when very young accepting forgiveness and lordship of the creator Triune. Went to various anglican, baptist, church of christ groups, and various christian and state schools including Willetton, Emmaus,Mullewa. I went to seven different primary schools, due to family moves. During the time we were in Armadale we lived next door to our grandparents, and my cousins AP. and CP., and benefited greatly from the interaction with our relatives playing backyard cricket and footy often. I chased cherrynose cicadas in my Grandads orchard, and my brothers and I attempted to build "cubbies", underground "tunnels", billycarts,(TP raced soapboxes near Wungong Dam and had a black Holden Torana SLR 5000 as his first car, while I bought a go-cart briefly {see photo here} and had a few drives at Cockburn and elsewhere while growing up for fun), in our attempts to live out the adventures we read about in books like the "famous five", "choose your own adventure", the "hardy boys", and many other books...
I have 5 younger brothers and sisters, who are all very well educated, TP went to college in USA on a basketball scholarship and now is an Athletic Director at a high school in North Carolina. SP spent some time at Curtin Uni in Physics, before Tafe and language studies, which he has taught for several years in Indonesia,South Korea, and Western Australia. KP is studying towards a PhD at Curtin, and also tutors. PP is finalising his lawyer qualifications and works in the area, including doing research for a parlimentarian. SJP topped the state in Indonesian, did very well at Uni and now teaches. God blessed us with very wonderful parents, who continue to take a keen interest in our lives each week many decades later.
I won premiership with Armadale junior footy club in 1986 and played little league for East Perth the same year. Did first grade piano in 1986, and sang in cathedral choir 1989. Developed interest in christian metal with Stryper in 1988, followed by many music artists since...Saw the Rockin Rabbis play in 1989,Whiteheart, and Amy Grant. Wanted to goto Whitecross and Mortification concerts. Saw Rageflower in the late 1990's. Sang lead vocals with a small church based band a few times in Kelmscott in the late 90's. Music interests have persisted with christian metal, techno and some softer stuff the dominant thing. Also enjoy classical music, and one of my favourite bands in Tourniquet combines extreme metal with strong classical influences, as does another band from the late 90's Believer (particularly on their dimensions album trilogy tracks)...In 2006 I discovered two Perth Christian metal bands Grave Forsaken and Scourged Flesh....see bottom of page for Grave Forsaken, and Scourged Flesh myspace pages...
Towards the end of school I discovered Christian Answers.net, which proved to be one of the most important things in shaping my worldview, and deepening my relationship with God, plus did some Scripture Union hiking camps, and went to a few baptist camps...
Played lots of sports growing up, and developed a strong interest in hiking, going bush, climbing mountains, tennis, golf, basketball, volleyball plus catching a few waves at the beach in summer. These I continue to do, with lots of hiking in recent years... Did Little Athletics from the age of 10, winning my first state championship medal in the 1.5km walk in 1987.
Met an excellent coach, whose coaching took me to the next level, partly through lots of long training on back roads between Armadale and Byford. Represented WA as a racewalker 1989-1993. Set state junior 10km walk records, and won lots of state titles from 1.5km to 30km by the time I was 19. Ran out of money for Nationasl trips and dropped out of it a bit 1993/1994, concentrating on getting to university and making a start there. Missed racing too much and soon got back into it. Again represented WA as a racewalker 1998-2000, including World Cup 50km walk trials and Olympic 20km and 50km walk trials before injuries in May and October 2000.
After 6-7 years of uni life, including 2 years of primary education with a physical education focus, and unsuccessful practicums I finally got degree in Leisure Sciences (aka recreation management), with a minor in sports science. I spent most of my uni life living in student village sharing life with international and country students, and while at Uni I got heavily involved with student christian uni groups. I learnt lots more about the bible, God, and how to serve Him better, got involved with Scripture Union camps again very briefly, and also 2 beach missions, which gave me lots of opportunities to share the most important message in the world, the 2 ways to live! I learnt more about living to the Max! for my Maker at things like Cornerstone weekend...
After many years of trying finally landed first serious girlfriend in 2000 but although a very special time, this didn't last long. Serious knee injuries (partly from basketball put me out of racewalking, but I eased my way into some running and cycling. Did the Central Park Stairclimb (race up the stairs of the tallest building in Perth) twice and a few novice triathlons in 1998 and 2002. Ran the Fremantle Half Marathon 5 times from 2003-2007. I have run the Bridges 10km/5km fun run 12 years in a row (1997-2008). Ran the inaugural Perth City to Surf Half Marathon in 2007. Eventually I ran 2 marathons (Perth (3 hours 55) and Rottnest) in 2004. In 2005 I ran another Perth marathon and my first ultra-marathon, the very hilly 6-inch 46km a pattern I repeated in 2006.
I ran Perth Marathon 2004-2007, and expect to continue this streak into 2008 and maybe beyond. WA Marathon club recognises people who have done 10 Perth Marathons as "spartans" and gives them a special race number, so if I complete the Perth in 2008 I will be halfway to "spartan" status. In 2007 I ran my first Melbourne Marathon. In 2008 I had my first serious exploration of the John Forrest 40 miler (64km) trails race, but decided to pull out at 46km, although suspect I am not far off nailing the sub 6hour 45 (official cutoff time in 2008) time, and hope to do that in future years.
For my Personal Best's etc go here...
Worked in recreation & sports management, public service, callcentres (directory assistance, freight, debt collection, electricity retail), and with electoral commission. Also retail and delivery driving. Struggled every year or two to find new positions. In 2006-2008 moved into meter reading work. In 2008 added a night callcentre job.
Am hoping for better opportunities with jobs and careers in the next 5-10 years!
Have maintained website on geocities since 1996. Travelled to USA in 2001 to visit my brother who was just finishing his college basketball scholarship. Went to the top of some of the Appalachian mountains with a friend while I was there. Also went to see the Sydney Olympics and the Melbourne Commonwealth Games which were quite memorable.
In April 2005 I met KL who became my Fiancee in December 2005 on top of Bluff Knoll which is the tallest mountain in the Stirling Ranges in the south west of Western Australia. Kathryn and I married October 2006, honeymooning in East Perth,Busselton,Dunsborough and the Stirling Ranges (we climbed Mt Trio and Bluff Knoll). Kathryn gave birth to our first child, a boy who we named Jacob in in late July 2007.
Some of my favourite teams to support are Fremantle Dockers in the AFL, Subiaco Lions in the WAFL, Perth Wildcats in the NBL, and San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. I am a bit of a tennis fan and have briefly flirted with attempting to play socially at a few tennis clubs...something I hope to do again sometime...Have been to watch the Hopman Cup tennis every year at Burswood from 2004-2008 so far ,my wife Kathryn has been there by my side in 2006-2008...
I hope to continue to make the most of the life God has blessed me with, and be all I can be for the Creator...
