################Left knee injury 21/10/00 handicap pre-op until 4/12/00...#################

24/10/00 32.30* (50m pool, with injured left knee causing the left leg to drag uselessly...)
--------------------------------------------------------

26/10/00 31.11(left knee still an issue.)
...the truly sweetest thing is to "keep on walking in the steps of faith"in our Maker. That is eternal, everything else isn't.I need to remember/be reminded of that often.
"...scatter these thieves,...sweet, sweet, sweet liberty".......I will not lay down... "sometimes you're going to feel all alone, but He's there...walk on strong and tall"...

29/10/00 30.35* (left knee issue...)
2/11/00 28.28*(Have adjusted. Used to injured left leg being useless now, and attacking splits in a 50m situation. Changes in the last 10 days, + reps session the previous day starting to pay off a lot, trying to stay motivated to keep at it.)
10/11/00 28.49* (l.k.)
16/11/00 29.37* (l.k. really low on energy all week, maybe it had something to do with the hot oppressive weather, dehydration etc, insomnia?, not sure why...also felt unusually unwell after this session, couldnt explain it.)

22/11/00 29.49 (l.k.still low on energy or something like that, and HR was excessively high at the end of the session, couldnt explain it (HR was 195 {10 second reading multiplied by 6}, it is usually around 160-180)... hopefully it will just sort itself out, maybe just need an easy week this week. Whatever it is I will fight through it if possible as I dont give up easy. Also had to be extra careful with knee which was very sensitive to movement today.)
-------------------------------------------------------

28/11/00 30.08* (l.k. took it easy in the first half, knee wasnt too bad this time...)
#################################################

05/12/00 AND 13/12/00: Problems with plantar worts, and lack of motivation and diahoreea, and other health issues...giving me some barriers, concerns to deal with... Got cartilage (lateral meniscus) in left knee fixed up via arthroscopy on 04/12/00, but unfortunately the arthroscopy also revealed a badly torn anterior cruciate ligament, (but apparently the knee is looking stable at this stage, which is a positive.) hopefully that is the full extent of the damage, and hopefully I can manage the torn ACL well. Of course I have been waiting since May 2000 to get the right knee's small meniscus tear dealt with, (some time next year?)......

21/12/00 29.36 Pretty good effort considering how unwell I have been in the last 2 weeks...left knee starting to kick in a little, rollon rehab/physio!!! In January I hope to improve a lot as my knee gets back full extension and flexion, and it shouldnt take me long to retrain the neuromuscular motor patterns, in fact I think I've already done some of that. Quadriceps, Hamstrings and Gastrocnemius probably the main muscles that will need restrengthening...)

2001;
8/1/01 28.13 Neuromuscular retraining of left leg, starting to work a fair bit now, and exercises are starting to pay off with better mobility, and I suspect the muscles are strengthening up a fair bit now. Next physio visit should hopefully confirm this by an increased range of motion (ROM) in extension and flexion. The return of most of my left leg kick and my recovery from most of the problems post-op, plus my first reps session in awhile is shown in a better time. Expect to get times into the 27min range and better from hereon, if everything keeps progressing.
31/01/01 27.54(flexion significantly improved now but still a fair bit to be done yet, Extension, muscular development needs quite a lot of improvement yet. Swimming no longer restricted during most of January, so thats great.)
05/02/01 27.17
08/03/01 27.26

Total 1km's for year	2	9	19	24

The Table above clearly illustrates how Jon's 1km swim times have improved each year with a jump up a level each year.
There is also a clear increase in the total number of 1km swim sessions completed each year. Data page 2 shows how cross-training (via swimming, cycling and running) has begun to affect the make-up of Jon's training during 1997-2000 compared to 1992-1993 where his training and racing was purely racewalking. This cross-training has become more prevalent due to the need to compensate for back, ankle and knee (x2) injuries, and also for the sake of variety and enjoyment of training and racing.
The atmosphere of racing with hundreds or thousands of others in a triathlon or a fun-run is more interesting than racing a 3km or 5km racewalk with 5 or 6 others. Having made that point, the atmosphere of racing in the Australian Championship and Olympic Trial 50km, or the 20km Olympic Trial in Stadium Australia (with 8 internationals in the field), beats any small-time funrun or triathlon by a long! way. Since Jon lives in Perth at this stage, some of the time, fun-run's and triathlons are the best things available.
