The 33rd LBG
Nick A’hern, Mike Harvey and Lisa Paolini (who all raced in the World Walk
Cup in France on 2 May) will compete in the LBG this year. Lisa who was the
third Australian to finish in the WWC 20km title will compete in the
10miles and 5,000m.
Iron man Mike Harvey will contest his 16th LBG 20 miles title in June 1999.
What an athlete Mike recorded 4hr 8min in the World Walk Cup in France in
May and heads the strong Victorian team.
Always in the top group Harvey won the event in 1994 and has recorded the
sixth fastest time ever. Only Willi Sawall (on the old one lap course) Craig
Barrett 139.37, Nathan Deakes 141.50, Nick A’hern 142.19, Duane Cousins
144.39 and Simon Baker 145.15 have gone faster than Harvey’s 145.55.
One eyed Essendon AFL supporter Duncan Knox will race his 20th LBG 20 miles
He is fast catching Frank Overton and Bill Starr and is years younger than
them. Frank is only doing the 10 miles this year owing to illness.
Craig Barrett, the Aust 30km champion, and winner of the 1998 LBG 20 miles
also competed in the WW Cup finishing about 11th. And raced walked the NZ
marathon on 6 June in 3hr 21m (that was just five weeks after his gruelling
50km effort in France)
Nick A’hern (trained by Craig Hilliard) will clash with Craig Barrett in
the 20 miles but the other AIS walkers are not competing..

Someone pointed out to me that I had left former Olympian Dave Smith out of

the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
He won umpteen state and Australian titles and is still very competitive as
a 40 year athlete.

Jane Saville and Nathan Deakes
Fast in Germany
Congratulations to Commonwealth Games champion Jane Saville who produced a
great 10km time in the German Grand Prix . Less than a week after her
sub-92-minute 20km time in the World Walk Cup Jane recorded a PB time to
finish sixth in 42m 15s. By the time the 2000 Olympic are held Jane could be
well under the 90minutes barrier.
Nathan Deakes finished 8th in the 20km in 81m 30s. It was another World
championship qualifying time for him. He finished in front of Huerta who was
10th and Chaohong who was 11th in WW Cup in France.

The 1999 World Walk Cup in France
There was six women under the 90 minute barrier in the first major
competition for women over the now recognised 20km distance, . Liu of China
won in 87m.32s.
Commonwealth Games 10km champion JANE SAVILLE was the best of the Australian
women in the Eschburn Cup. Jane finished with an excellent time of 91m 58s
for 18th place. It was a World Championship ‘A’ time and will get her a
place in the world T/F team at Seville in August.. Only three Aust men were
slightly faster than Jane’s time.
Kerry Saxby-Junna was 21 in 92m 24s. . The big surprise was the outstanding
time by Lisa Sheridan-Paolini who finished 40 in 96m 20s. Lisa was selected
to replace Natalie Saville who was not satisfied with her form and withdrew.
What a decision. I dont think many athletes would have done what Natalie did
and dropped her self because her performances were not up to scratch. Simone
Wolowiec was 59 in 99m 31s…Wendy Muldoon was fifth Aussie in 87 in 106m.45s.
………………………………………………………………….
The men’s 20km was won by Segura (Mex) in 80m.20s by one second from Yu
(China) with Andreyev eight seconds back in third place. Tim Berrett (Can)
based at AIS for a while was 47 and young Pierce O’Callaghan IRL 57,, Chris
Maddocks 77,, Jamie Costin IRL 95th.
SA’s champion Darren BOWN let the Australian in Darren finished 50 in
89m.31s . Luke Adams was 55 in 90.11. and teenager and two time WJC rep Troy
Sundstrom 59 in 90.19. Nick A‘hern DNF and Nathan Deakes was DQ’d when in
top 10 near end of race.
…………………………………………………………………….
The 50km produced some great results and times. Sergey Korepanov clocked
3.39.22 in winning (about the fifth best ever reports states) Lipiec 3.49.9.
The Canberra LBG star Craig Barrett (NZ) was 13th in 3h.48m.14s.
DOMINIC McGRATH the C/wealth Games bronze medallist was first Aussie
in.46th place. Domonic recorded 4h 00m 50s and beat Duane Cousins (4.2.27).
Mike Harvey cut ten minutes off his trial time and Aust title time to finish
in 61st with 4h 8m 58s. and Shane Pearson was 73rd in 4h 16m 43s.
In Brief
...The 33rd LBG Interstate classic on 13 June looks like being a success
with early inquiries indicating good entries expected again.
...Former NSW rep Vic Townsend, Frank McCaffrey and George McGrath will
celebrate their 80th year this year. .
...I was going thru the address book. Queensland still attract former walkers
up there. Former world champ sue Cook and Bruce are now Qlders, Bob and Rita
Mee are at the Gold Coast, Keith Heness at Caloundra way. Greg Sockhill at
Calboolture, Don Cox at Cairns, Tom and Betty Daintry and Gwen Vines at
Deagon, Logan Irwin at Southport, Brian Overton at GC Caleb Maybir still in
Brisbane somewhere and former NSW champ Liz Inglis in Brisbane.
