Jon's Stadium Australia page

More photos of Stadium Australia and the surrounding area...where the Olympic Ceremony and Olympic Athletics events will be held in September 2000 at Homebush, Sydney.

Unfortunately this page has been put together in a hurry (as I am too busy to really spend much time on it...) as you will see from the DIFFERENT angles the photos are at etc etc...I mucked up with autostraighten in photoshop or something like that...*LOL*

The day before my 20km walk race I visited the SIAC (Sydney International Athletic Centre) to get my accreditation pass which I needed in order to compete and move around inside the stadium...Above is a photo of the Aquatic centre (on the left) and the SIAC (on the right) as seen from Stadium Australia.

On the day of my race I caught several trains from where I was staying at the Burwood Motel to the Olympic train station. I arrived there about 7am. Above is the entrance to the Olympic Train station.

As I left the train station this is what I saw, the view of the Novotel hotel...

Then this...

Then Stadium Australia from the outside.
Below are some photos from inside Stadium Australia;...

Here is the winner of my race, Nathan Deakes, shaking hands with another Victorian who was 3rd (or 4th if you count the Mexican who is sharing the 2nd spot with Nick Ahern), in Dion Russell. Russell and Deakes deadheated in the 50km walk Olympic trial in Melbourne in December 1999, which I also competed in. Russell, Deakes and Ahern are Australia's best chances for a top ten finish or maybe a medal in the 20km and 50km walks at the Olympics in September. Ahern was 4th in the 20km at the Atlanta Olympics.

The results of the Men and Women's placegetters in the 20km walk that day, unfortunately despite zooming in and sharpening the image you cant really read it on this photo... The full results of all who finished the race, including my mediocre time for 27th place are here.

Here is a shot from a sydney newspaper of Deakes and Ahern during the race on the right, and Jane Saville the first Australian Woman in the race on the left. (she did very well, but couldnt beat the two Italian women this time.)
