The Much Music Music Video
Awards
September 23, 1999
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
On Sept. 23 I (Amanda) went to the Much Music Video Awards show in downtown
Toronto. I spent all freaking day and evening there mainly to get
a glimpse of my favourite band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I got
there about 12-12:30pm when Bratney...rrrrr, I mean Britney Spears was
finishing up her sound check. As it turns out, she went through her
routine 6 times to get it all right. All the other bands went through
2-3 times...and they had instruments! Ok, so you can tell she's not
on my faves list, eh? Anyhow, I got there and was totally psyched
that it was almost all outdoors and there were sound checks that I could
watch. This was too cool! I had no idea when the Chilis set
was going to be, so I planted my self there with my handy camera.
I also had no idea who else was supposed to be there (besides a whole sh*t
load of teeny bopper stuff...98 degrees, Bratney Spores/Britney Spears,
the Moffats). So the next set is getting set up. An hour later
I look up at who's coming on stage and nearly pass out. It's DAVID
BOWIE!!! I had never seen him in person....my lord, the man is beautiful!!!!
And he sounded so good up there!! Chain smoked like all hell, but
I was too enthralled at the fact that DAVID BOWIE was right there!
I snapped a few pix of him as he rehearsed, and then he took a digital
picture of the fans out there...and yes, I was one of them in the pic!!
Too cool! David Bowie has a picture of me...I feel special now...LOL
ANYWAYS...the day progressed...Sky came on, and the Chilis came on.
I was ready to kill some construction workers across the street.
They were putting this "Pizza Pizza" sign up and you couldn't hear anything
over it. I think it pissed the Chilis off too. Anthony asked
over the mic if he (the construction dude) could hold off for a bit.
They played "Scar Tissue" twice with this really cool jamming ending.
They also jammed a little before hand to warm up (I guess). Flea
was sporting pink hair...good colour on him, although I loved the blue!
John was amazing...what else is there to say about a guitar god!?
Chad is Chad....the coolest guy around, IMHO (and Meg's too! LOL).
And Anthony was feeling the music and dancin' around. I love how
they play to each other. It's so unified and the music seems to flow
so sweetly that way. It's the whole family vibe, I guess :o)
Well, as the day progressed, more and more people arrived. We (everyone
I was hanging out with) didn't have tickets to get in, but were all hoping
to get in somehow. About 15 minutes before showtime, they gave some
of us wrist bands and we (Mark, Glenda, Stacy, and me) went in. We
were psyched! We got almost to the front and stayed there most of
the show. We lost Mark after about one third of the show, but we
met another girl that was helping us get to the front (Ashleigh).
From then on, we all stuck together and rocked out...well, if we could
have moved more, we would have done more then bang our heads and cheer,
but nonetheless...we rocked out.
Our Lady Peace did a good job. They opened up the show.
The singer is gorgeous...just thought I'd share that with you...LOL
Sky impressed me (not to mention that the bassist (Antoine) is way cool),
I think I'll get their album. The Moffats weren't so bad either *shocked*!
I was disappointed with Len, though. Now, I know that the guy's voice
is sratchy, but it sounded worse in person...*sorry* Ummm...who else...98
degrees was OK. They did an acappela thing at the entrance of the
building. We (the girls I was kickin' it with and me) ended up leaving
after the Chilis. We wanted to stay for Bratney to boo her amongst
other annoying stuff, but it was getting to be hellish at the front and
I was thirsty and hungry (I hadn't drank or eaten anything since the night
b4), so we left. I think that's about all I can remember for now.
Here are the pictures that I took and scanned. Please do not use
them without my permission!
