17.04.1995 LEAGUE OF WALES
BARRY TOWN 2 RHYL FC 1
Withers 2
Barry’s Easter Monday was improved by two goals from Dai Withers, one either side of half-time, which gave Paul Giles’s side a welcome improvement after a single goal victory at Holywell two days earlier. Withers’ first goal came from a free-kick after 16 minutes. The ball was knocked into his path and he comfortably scored. Withers made it 2-0 with a 64th minute goal, which sealed the game. Rhyl pulled a goal back through Dave Barbour, his second in three days, but Barry took all three points.
16.04.1996 LEAGUE OF WALES
EBBW VALE 0 BARRY TOWN 1
Batchelor
Barry won their first League of Wales championship on a wet, Wednesday evening at Ebbw Vale’s Eugene Cross Park. Like all matches between the two sides, the game was a tough battle, even though Vale were without Craig Evans who had recently signed for Barry. The mud and heavy rain worked to the advantage of neither side, but it was Barry who took the three points they needed. Ten minutes into the second half, a corner from the right was floated in, and after a partial clearance it fell to Willie Batchelor whose header went past both defence and keeper, and led the celebrations in running to the Barry bench.
16.04.1997 LEAGUE OF WALES
INTER CABLETEL 1 BARRY TOWN 2
Barnett, Bird
Barry’s second title was clinched on the same date as the first, and again at a local South Wales ground with a large traveling support. On this occasion, Barry needed only a point and two first half goals for the Dragons meant that the second half was played as a celebration, with Barry never in danger of losing the title. Fittingly, it was player/manager, Gary Barnett, who sealed his own championship triumph. A 34th minute strike from some distance dipped viciously and the shot went over the Inter keeper and rolled down the back of the net. Barry’s second goal was only four minutes later, when a corner fell to Tony Bird and he netted to the further delight of the Barry support at the Athletic Stadium. Inter pulled a goal back midway through the second half, but it was irrelevant as Barry won a second League of Wales championship.
18.04.1998 WELSH CUP SEMI-FINAL
BARRY TOWN 1 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS 2
Carter
(at Latham Park, Newtown).
Barry fell prey to a goal at the beginning of both halves as they were knocked out of the Welsh Cup at the semi-final stage by Connah’s Quay Nomads. The Deeside club took the lead after just five minutes, when Steve Rain beat Patrick Mountain in the Barry goal. It took Barry until the twentieth minute to get back on level terms, when Danny Carter beat Nomads’ keeper, Phil Collister. Barry had the better opportunites in the first half, but could do little when in the fiftieth minute, a viciously hit free-kick from Steve Futcher gave the Nomads the lead again. Soon after, the North Walians were down to ten men, but Barry were unable to force their way back into the game and score an equaliser.
