Manager Graham Sharp left the club, as did many of the players who won the Cup for the Blues. Former Caernarfon boss, John King, was recruited as replacement, and King brought a large number of players into Welsh football from the Unibond League, including a large nuumber from Liverpool side, General Motors.
Opening their League of Wales account with a visit to Caersws, it was clear that Bangor’s thoughts lay elsewhere as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to the mid-Wales village side.
However, Bangor did themselves and Wales proud in their return match in Finland, falling prey only to a sucker-punch goal from the Finns, and unfortunately going out 3-0 on aggregate.
The Citizens fortunes improved soon after through, with back to back victories against Total Network Solutions in the League of Wales and Cardiff City in the FAW Premier Cup, both games played away from Farrar Road. Against TNS, Mark Allen scored City’s opening goal, but it was Sammy Ayorinde’s 90th minute strike that secured the points in a 2-1 win. Two days later in Cardiff, Bangor turned in a magnificent performance against the English Third Division side, with Darren Hilditch’s 45th minute goal winning the match. Hilditch’s control and curling shot won him the ‘Goal of the Month’ award for September.
However, back at Farrar Road, Bangor lost 3-2 to Newtown, and John King left the North Walian club. Bangor took the lead when a free-kick from City ‘keeper, Lee Williams, sailed over the head of his opposite number, but Newtown scored three times, leaving Paul Mooney’s goal as nothing more than consolation.
In fact, it was Lee Williams who was confirmed as the new Bangor manager, although the club were managerless for their Gilbert Cup match at home to Conwy. The game ended as a 1-1 draw, with Martin Filson scoring Bangor’s goal. Williams, though, at least kept a clean sheet on his managerial debut, with a goalless draw at Haverfordwest.
However, those successes were followed by four straight losses. Away at Merthyr Tydfil for a Premier Cup clash, the Valleys side took a two goal leac before Danny McGoona reduced the deficit, while City lost to Newtown in a rearranged League of Wales match. In a 3-1 defeat, Paul Mooney scored the Bangor goal. City were again on the wrong end of the scoreline when they entertained Cardiff City at Farrar Road. Only Neil Wenham found the target for Bangor as they lost 4-1. Days later, it was Barry who were the visitors to Farrar Road, and the League of Wales champions beat Bangor 3-0.
Perhaps City’s best result this year was the unexpected 5-0 victory over Newtown in the second round of the Gilbert League of Wales Cup. Having lost twice in recent weeks to the mid-Wales side, Bangor romped to victory with two goals from new signing Tommy Mutton and further damage being done by Darren Hilditch, Lee Williams and Garnell.
It was therefore disappointing for City fans to lose the next three consecutive games, which included their Welsh Cup title. At home to Aberystwyth, Steve Jones scored Bangor’s goal in a 2-1 defeat, while former Barry and Rhyl player, Dave Norman, scored on his City debut with a fifth minute goal against Rhyl in the Premier Cup. However, that wasn’t enough as City lost 2-1 at Belle Vue. Even more of a disappointment to Bangor was to go out of the Welsh Cup in the third round, with LoW bottom club, Rhayader Town winning 3-0 at the Weirglodd.
However, Bangor did at least beat Afan Lido on their trip to South Wales in the League of Wales. Two Williams, Lee and Steve, got the goals as Bangor won 2-0.
City then achieved a creditible draw at home to Cwmbran Town, having been two goals down to the then-Championship challengers. Tommy Mutton and Danny Shepherd pulled City level to 2-2. However, Christmas wasn’t to be full of happy memories for City, with a loss at neighbours Conwy United, where they lost 3-1 and then a draw at home to arch-rivals Caernarfon Town, who scored in the third minute of injury time to earn a point in Bangor. Former Conwy player, Robbie Williams, scored against his old club but found himself on the losing side, while Steve Jones got the important goal against Caernarfon.
