1993-94 Calder Cup Champions

The Portland Pirates came into existence in 1993-94, a season not to be forgotten. The year before they had been known as the Baltimore Skipjacks. They came with a star studded team with a mastermind for a coach known as Barry Trotz, who is now the coach of the Nashville Predators. Some of the NHL stars that were on this team were Olie Kolzig, Jason Allison, and Byron Dafoe. The Pirates beat the Moncton Hawks in 6 games to win the Calder Cup Championship in their inaugural year. The first team to do so since the Maine Mariners.

Two years later the Pirates were once again in the Calder Cup Finals. The opponent this time was the Rochester Americans. This was a classic series. It was game seven when the Pirates' 95-96 season would end as they were defeated 2-1 in a well played game.

The Pirates made the biggest turnaround in the league last year as they racked up 46 more points than the dreadful year of 98-99. The Pirates were unbeatable in the middle of the season and looked unstoppable up to the playoffs when an enemy they could not overcome hit them hard. The injury bug. The Pirates were eliminated in the first round 3 games to 1 by the Worcester Icecats.

Over the offseason the Pirates have lost quite a few players including Defensemen Steve Poapst, who signed with Chicago, and Nolan Baumgartner who was traded to Chicago. The AHL goalie of the year, Martin Brochu, was signed by Calgary and will most likely start out with Saint John with Miika Elomo. Jeff Toms was picked up by the New York Islanders while Barrie Moore was selected in the Expansion Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Pirates also will have some new faces this year with Defensemen Todd Rohloff and Remi Royer. Michal Sivek should be the rookie to look for on the roster while the core veterans, Hulst and Nelson, are back to lead the Pirates. The Pirates have 2 capable goalies in Curtis Cruikshank and Sebastien Charpentier returning to share time between the pipes. Mike Peluso will be back with his grit and scoring ability while Jamie Huscroft will be around to irritate the opposition with Jason Shymr as the enforcer. It should be a fun year. Lets go Pirates in 2000-2001!
