Venezia

Venice was probably the most picturesque city we visited. We didn't do much historical sight-seeing here - we just walked around and got lost in the city, literally. Venice was the most confusing place I've ever been to, but it was fun just to get lost walking around. The only ways to get around were by foot or on the water. It was very expensive to go by water (water taxis were absolutely outrageous and water buses not too much better) so we walked almost everywhere. The problem is few streets are more than 40 feet long and the maps are difficult to follow. We just kept our bearings to the Grand Canal (the main waterway that divides Venice) and eventually always made it back to the hotel.

The Regatta. We got incredibly lucky and saw the annual Regatta, or gondola "race", which is really a parade. The train station is right on the Grand Canal (the main waterway through Venice) and we arrived from Rome about an hour before the parade was supposed to pass so we just stayed there and watched. This was taken from a bridge close to the train station. You weren't allowed to watch from the bridge but it had the best viewpoint so I just kept walking back and forth, taking pictures. It was such a beautiful day and the gondolas and row boats were so colorful we ended up taking almost 20 pictures of the Regatta.

I just love the colors in this photo (although they don't look as great here as they do in the real photo but you can see how the blues and reds stand out). This was on the Grand Canal.

The side "streets" of Venice. This was taken from one of the many, many walkways over the water.

Here we are on a gondola ride - the photo was taken by our "gondolier". It was ridiculously overpriced and we had decided not to go on one but the evening before we left we decided it was our honeymoon so we'd spring for it. We had a lot of fun and were glad we did.

On to Florence
