There goes Rickey...

These are the only three things I can post right now. They are some pretty signifigant bases.

The first is from August 27, 1982. The sight is County Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconson. Rickey runs against Brewer pitcher Doc Medich and catcher Ted Simmons. He slides in safely under the tag of Robin Yount, stolen base number 119 on the season, a new single season stolen base record. The game is stopped, Rickey pulls the bag from the ground, holds it above his head and plants a kiss on the forehead of Dwayne Murphy. Rickey went on to steal three more bases against Medich and Simmons that night.

May 1, 1991. The New York Yankees visting Oakland. ESPN had been showing A's games every night in an effort to show Rickey's record breaking steal, but a leg injury slowed Rickey and a day game prevented ESPN from showing the entire game. They did however, break into regular programming when he reached base. After being thrown out by Matt Nokes in his first attempt (and Rickey feels Nokes showed him up by making a big display of fist-pumping) Rickey reached base in the fourth on an infield single to short. He advanced to second on a Dave Henderson single. Yankee pitcher Tim Leary watched in frustration as Rickey call for a pair of Oakley sunglasses (a new fashion statement then). After a Jose Canseco fly out, Harold Baines stepped to the plate. With a 2-and-0 count Rickey took off. sliding head-first into third base ahead of the tag. Rickey ripped the base out of the ground and held stolen base number 939 above his head in triumph. A ceremony followed in which he made his amfamous "I am the greatest..." speech which you can read here to see what was really said.

Just found this one. Despite injuries as well as age, Rickey continued to run. Here is Rickey's 1,000th stolen base. This base put Rickey only 66 steals away from the World Record of 1,066 steals set by Yutaka Fukumoto of Japan. If you don't know if he has broken that record yet, think about it. His 1,000th steal was over 7 years ago. He stole 66 last season alone to lead the majors at age 39.
