The Texas Rangers and Doug Melvin have a lot of work to do in the off season. There are four main problems that will be addressed: singing an ace type pitcher, resigning Clayton at SS or trading for a different one, either signing Bernie Williams at CF, or trying to keep Goodwin, and resigning Will Clark. Because of Hick's deep pocket there is no doubt that at least three of the four will be accomplished.

The ace pitcher for next season will most likely be either Randy Johnson or Todd Stottlemyre. Melvin made Johnson a "competitive" contract offer on Saturday. Later this week Johnson is expected to take the same "tour" of the Ballpark in Arlington that convinced John Wetteland to sign in 1996. Johnson will probably make his decision by the end of the week.

One of the keys of the Ranger's partial success last year was Royce Clayton. In games where Clayton started short stop the pitchers ERA was a whole point lower than when any other SS got the start. This goes to show how much a good defensive short stop can help a team. Clayton is a must for next season.

Yankees Win World Series

All Ranger fans would have much rather seen our Rangers win it all, but it was a glorious win for the Yankees. The '98 Yanks will from now on be known as one of the best teams ever. The sweep of the Padres was not even close to the drama of last year's seven game series, but it was an extremely emotional one for the Yanks, whose Darryl Strawberry was unable to play due to cancer.
