1998 has been a tough year for the Seattle Mariners so far. The Mariners are 10 games out in the AL West here in mid-August and haven't made much ground up in over 2 months. Ken Griffey has been in pursuit of Roger Maris' record 61 HR's but has slowed his pace of late. Randy Johnson was traded to the Houston Astros moments before the trading deadling was up in late July for 3 minor league players. It doesn't look like the M's year. Next year will feature the opening of Safeco Field in July 1999, the Mariners new ballpark. The Mariners were the first major league baseball team to have a webpage.
The Seattle SuperSonics came up short in '97-98, being swept in the 2nd round by the Los Angeles Lakers, a fairly good season none the less. Unfortunately the off-season brought the firing of George Karl and the hiring of ex-Sonic player and ex-Phoenix Sun player/coach Paul Westpaul. Have to wait and see what next years team will look like, if they ever end this stupid players lockout....
The Portland Rockies had a great 1997 season, winning the Class A division. I don't mind rooting for the Rockies, except when they play the Everett AquaSox, the Mariners farm team. I might have to stop rooting for them though...if the Mariners end up in the National League next year.
Whenever in Seattle, I listen to SportsRadio 950 KJR to keep in touch with the happenings in the Seattle sports scene.
