Latics
strike for French trialist
ATHLETIC
today welcomed French striker Robert Mpoyi Onskoko to Boundary Park for
trials. The 19-year-old spent the first three years of his career at Paris
St Germain, one of Europe’s top teams. Onskoko
joined French second division club Creteil on his release and scored 14
goals in 28 appearances for them last season. The player, who has African
ancestry, will not command a fee because he is an amateur. “There
are some good players in the lower divisions in France and they are worth
looking at,” said the player’s agent, Phil Black. “Onskoko
has an impressive CV.”
Black
pointed out that Frenchman Nicolas Anelka was similarly unknown when he
was signed by Arsenal. He added that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and
Liverpool’s Gerard Houllier have both unearthed gems because of their in-depth
knowledge of French football. Black points
out that he discovered French player Michael Kaprilla, a 19-year-old who
has been a huge hit in the short time he has been at Bolton Wanderers. He
said: “Until Robert works out with Oldham we won’t know if he is what they
are looking for. But he is desperate to play in England and it is a great
opportunity for him. “I have a long
relationship with Oldham from Joe Royle’s days and I know they are looking
for a centre forward. It would be nice if I could help them.
“Oldham
is a friendly, family club and the sort of place which should suit Robert.” There
have been no new developments on the transfer front involving Andrew Holt
and Mark Innes. Defender Holt has been the subject of an inquiry from an
unnamed club and Athletic have told them the fee they are seeking. Scottish
midfield player Innes, whom Athletic listed last season, is attracting
interest from Tranmere, but they have not followed up an initial inquiry.

Holt
to leave?
The Latics
have had an inquiry for defender Andrew Holt and are ready to do business
if the price is right. The winger-turned-wingback was the only man to start
every league game last season and won the Supporters' Association player
of year award. The only game he missed last year was the FA Cup tie against
Chelmsford because he was suffering from a dead leg. He has passed the
100 mark for appearances for the club and has won the label "Mr Reliability."
Andy Ritchie isn't naming the interested club, who had Holt watched several
times last season, but is keeping the player informed of any developments.
Ritchie said: "I can confirm a club has made an inquiry for Andy and I
have told them my price. "It is now up to them to make a decision and the
ball is in their court."
He added: "Any
move would have to be right for the club and for the player."
McNiven
to miss start of the season
Oldham have suffered
a major blow before a ball has even been kicked in the new campaign. Twenty-one
year old defender Scott McGiven will miss the start of the season after
he fractured his cheekbone in an accidental clash of heads while playing
in a five-a-side game with an amateur club at home in Blackpool.
It means the
player will be out for up to eight weeks and it has also dashed any hopes
the club might have of cashing in on the Scotland under-21 man's growing
reputation. McNiven is one of five players on the Latics transfer list
but any interested club will now put a possible move on hold. The player
has rejected a new two-year contract and is currently on a week-to-week
agreement.
Corrazin
continues to be linked
Andy Ritchie
is continuing to be linked with a move for Northampton's Canadian international
Carlo Corrazin. The 28-year-old former Cambridge and Plymouth striker could
be leaving Sixfields on a Bosman free transfer. Ritchie has admitted to
being an admirer of the player but accepts that meeting his wage demands
could well be beyond the Boundary Park outfit.
Old
boy pledges future
Former
Oldham keeper Andy Goram has pledged the rest of his playing career to
Motherwell. The 36-year-old believes he has another five years at the top
level before he retires from the game. Goram said: "I'm feeling brand new
and I can't wait to get playing. "This is my 20th season and I can't get
away from it - it's in my blood."

TWO
IN RACE TO SIGN CARLO
GILLINGHAM
and Oldham Athletic are in the running to sign former Cobblers striker
Carlo Corazzin. The Canadian international has yet
to find a club since being released by Cobblers boss Kevin Wilson at the
end of last season. He has been linked with numerous clubs, but it now
seems likely he will be bound for either Boundary Park or the Priestfield
Stadium. The main stumbling block for clubs wanting to sign Corazzin is
that he is set to miss up to a third of the campaign on World Cup duty
with the Canadian national side.
The
Cobblers, meanwhile, have been continuing their pre-season build up, and
some of the squad will don their boots for the first time on Thursday evening.
The
first official pre-season friendly is on Friday night at Milton Keynes
City, but a Northampton Town XI has agreed to play at UCL division one
side Woodford United, now managed by former Cobblers midfielder Aidy Mann.
Kick-off for the Woodford match is 7.30pm, and admission is £2 for
adults, £1 for senior citizens and free for accompanied children.
A more experienced team should line up on Friday at Milton Keynes City
(ko 7.45pm), who play at Wolverton Town’s old ground, which is a stone’s
throw from the town’s train station. Admission for this one against the
Spartan South Midlands Premier League outfit is £3 adults and £1
for children and OAP. It will be the team’s only workout before they head
west on Sunday for their week-long tour of Ireland, where they will play
Bray Wanderers, narrow 3-2 losers to Glasgow Celtic last weekend, on Monday,
Dundalk on Wednesday and Longford Town on Friday.
