Latics crash out of Cup

A late Neil Adams goal couldn't prevent Oldham from losing for the second consecutive Saturday at Preston, the FA Cup tie finished 2-1. Just to compound Andy Ritchie's woe Mark Hotte was sent-off after 69 minutes for a professional foul on Preston striker Bjarki Gunnlaugsson. Neil Adams, absent for the last four games, passed a late fitness test, whilst Craig Dudley, out for the last three games, was named among the substitutes. Preston took the lead after just 6 minutes. Jon Macken, who scored twice against Oldham last weekend in the league clash at Deepdale, scoring his 15th of the season. Macken chased down an optimistic long ball and won a corner. David Eyres swung the ball in from the right, Ryan Kidd's effort hit a cluster of defenders and the ball broke to Macken, who turned and shot home from short range with his left foot. As was the case when the two teams met in the league seven days ago Oldham reacted to falling a goal behind by playing positive football and were unlucky not to equalise by the break. Steve Whitehall forced a good save from Tepi Moilanen, as did John Sheridan with a wonderfully struck free kick that missed the wall and appeared goalbound until Preston's big Finn got in the way. Preston nearly doubled their lead five minutes before the break when David Eyres thundered a 20 yard drive towards goal that was saved by Gary Kelly. PNE doubled the lead after 69 minutes when the ever reliable Graham Alexander converted from the penalty spot. Bjarki Gunnlaugsson had been put through and was heading goalwards at pace when he was brought down by Mark Hotte. The referee sent Hotte off for a professional foul and Preston were awarded a penalty. Two goals and a man down, things were looking pretty grim for Oldham but they stuck to their task and were rewarded with a goal five minutes from time. Adams fired at optimistic shot at goal which really ought not to have troubled Moilanen but the keeper fumbled and the ball somehow got through his defences. Shortly before the Latics scored Bjarki Gunnlaugsson has converted an Eyres cross in spectacular style only for his effort to be ruled out for off-side. The Latics have not had the rub of the green in their encounters with Preston this season and will be glad to see the back of the men from Deepdale .
City test in AWS
Oldham Athletic will play host to Stoke City in the Second Round of the Auto Windscreen Shield - Northern Section. The tie is due to be played during the week commencing January 10. Teamtalk Preston
Unbeaten run continues
A penalty from Graham Alexander and a left footed shot from Jon Macken gave Preston a 2-1 win over Oldham in the FA Cup clash at Deepdale. Preston are thus through to the fourth round for the first time in six years. The last time Preston got this far in the competition they got knocked out by Kidderminster Harriers.
Sean Gregan returned to the Preston side for the clash with the Latics, as did Mark Rankine. Without the injured Lee Cartwright, David Moyes once more selected Julian Darby out on the right whilst Bjarki Gunnlaugsson, who scored a hat-trick on Tuesday, kept his place. Preston's unbeaten run continues to grow and North End have now seen off the Latics three times this season.

PRESTON 2 OLDHAM 1
Jon Macken inflicted the damage on Oldham for the second time in eight days to push Preston through to the next round. Macken had scored three times against his opponents this season prior to the club's first ever meeting in the FA Cup. He opened the score on six minutes, scrambling in David Eyres' corner in the goal area. Preston's second came the same minute as Mark Hotte was sent off for fouling Bjarki Gunnlaugsson in the 69th minute. Graham Alexander crashed in the penalty kick. Oldham kept plugging away and were rewarded when Neil Adams' strike was parried and dropped over the line by keeper Teuvo Moilanen five minutes from time. In the closing minutes Paul Rickers narrowly missed out with a header.
