Boss backs development plans

Andy Ritchie has thrown his weight behind plans to redevelop Boundary Park to create virtually a new stadium. He said: "It's great for the fans and I am sure they will be over the moon. "It has always been one of the favoured options and I am delighted we are staying. "We need facilities for the 21st Century and there is no doubt that this is the way forward. It can only be good for the club and it is definitely what is needed." The work will be done in stages and it won't stop the Latics playing all their games at Boundary Park. A meeting is planned for later this month to draw up a planning brief for the new ground which will be named 'The Oldham Stadium.'

Salt's fitness hopes

Phil Salt is hoping that he can stay clear of injuries when the new season gets under way in August. The 21-year-old local lad missed most of last season with a serious ankle injury. He said: "I had snapped the band which keeps the tendon and ligament together. In all it kept me out for seven months and it was very frustrating. "It was the first serious injury I ever had an I had to undergo surgery to put it right." Salt had begun the season on the bench and had made just two starts when he picked up the injury. But, he was able to prove his fitness in the last couple of games of the season. Salt said: "I had so much work to catch up with that I virtually had to do pre-season all over again. "But it was great getting back before the season was over." Salt has been at Boundary Park since he was 11 and has worked his way through all the ranks to the senior side. He added: "Manchester City, Bury and Rochdale were all interested in taking me but I had always been happy with the Latics and was never tempted to go elsewhere."
Graham safe for now

Richard Graham will not be a Sheffield United player next season following news that Neil Warnock would prefer to sign Keith Curle instead. Warnock denied his interest in Graham on Friday and it is almost certain that Graham will still be at Boundary Park, following Curle's link to the First Division club. It is now thought Neil Warnock would prefer to sign a more experienced defender.

Go ahead for Oldham ground

OLDHAM Athletic are to get a new stadium, without having to leave Boundary Park. The decision to redevelop the Sheepfoot Lane site - where Latics have been at home for 100 years - was taken at a high-level meeting between club officials and the local authority, who will make a significant investment. It means plans for a new state-of-the-art stadium on the nearby Clayton playing fields as planned by the previous Labour administration - will now be scrapped. The new scheme has been thrashed out between the town’s new Liberal Democrat council and representatives of the Latics and Oldham RL. It is expected to cost considerably less than the £15 million to develop the Clayton site, because there will be no re-location costs. Said Latics’ chief executive Alan Hardy: ‘‘Both ourselves and Oldham rugby league are delighted and I am sure our fans will be as well. We are hoping to start work very quickly - possibly next summer.’’ The work will be carried out in stages and could take up to three years.
