Points, goals....it must be Christmas!

The Latics collected their first points of the season and scored their first league goals at home on Saturday in defeating Bury 2-0. The sigh of relief around Boundary Park when the referee blew his final whistle could be heard in Manchester. There was some good news even before kick off, Steve Whitehall named in the starting line-up for the first time this season to give the team a lift.  It was perhaps not surprising that the first half finished goalless given that neither side had created much in the way of tangible chances. On balance Bury had the best of the chances, a Lutel James cross finding Adrian Littlejohn after only 3 minutes but his header drifted just wide. Mid-way through the half John Sheridan gave possession away in a dangerous area but the Shakers top scorer, Ian Lawson, failed to capitalise and his rather lame shot was easily saved by Gary Kelly. Minutes before Paul Rickers tackled Littlejohn inside the Latics penalty area, prompting furious penalty appeals from Bury, all of which were dismissed out of hand by the referee.
Steve Whitehall came the closest to scoring for the Latics in the first half but his shot early in the game lacked venom and presented Paddy Kenny with few problems in the Shakers goal.  The Latics opened the second half with a sight more endeavour and were soon rewarded with their first goal of the season at Boundary Park. Mark Allott made superb contact from 20 yards and his shot flew past Kenny and into the top scorer. After 332 minutes of league football at Boundary Park this season the supporters finally had something to jump up and down about. Oldham effectively wrapped up the points, their first of the season, after 81 minutes when Lee Duxbury doubled the lead for the Latics. Ritchie will be hoping that now his men are up and running form will dramatically improve and his team will start to climb the table for despite winning the Latics remain bottom.
