Latics fail to take advantage

A Shaun Garnett header was not enough as goals from Ty Gooden, Barry Ashby and Rodney Rowe earned the Gills a 3-1 win. Oldham started the game in the worst possible manner by going a goal down within four minutes but the manner in which it was scored would have left Andy Ritchie bitterly disappointed. The goal came about as a result of a desperately short back pass down by the Oldham left hand post. Gary Kelly did well to muster some sort of clearance which struggled to make it's way to the edge of the area but in the resulting melee, the ball ricocheted to Ty Gooden, who with an empty goal at his mercy, duly opened the scoring for the visitors. Creditably Oldham levelled matters almost immediately when Vince Bartram failed to hold the first corner kick of the game. Lee Duxbury snapped up the loose ball but his shot was blocked and half cleared. Duxbury, however, managed to retrieve the ball and U-turn to send in a teasing cross which escaped everybody except Shaun Garnett, who stole in at the far post to neatly head home. From then on, Oldham dominated the rest of the first-half but regrettably failed to take advantage of the favourable wind. When Gillingham restored their lead, four minutes before half-time, the goal was very much against the run of play. Barry Ashby applied the subtlest of touches to Andy Hessenthaler's free kick and the Gills went into the break knowing the strong wind would be in their favour. One difference between the two teams was that Gillingham used the advantage of the wind to full effect but the third goal which really ruled Oldham out of this contest came about as a superb piece of counter-attacking.
Nicky Southall took one look before picking out Roland Edge, one of three players streaming out of defence. His immediate, pin-point cross found Rodney Rowe who killed the game with Gillingham's third.

ESPN Soccernet Gillingham forgot next week's FA Cup glamour tie against Chelsea to make sure of three more vital promotion points in a 3-1 win at Oldham. It was their first away win since November last year and Oldham's first defeat in six home games. The Gills gave early warning of their intentions when Ty Gooden put them in front after just four minutes. Oldham hit back to equalise in the seventh minute when Sean Garnett grabbed his first goal of the season. But the Gills restored their lead in the 41st minute when Barry Ashby found the net. The game was put out of Oldham's reach in the 67th minute when Rodney Rowe grabbed a third goal.
Sporting Life review of the weekend Preston North End went two points clear at the top of Division Two thanks to Sean Gregan's smash and grab winner at Saltergate.

His 78th minute effort kept Chesterfield pinned one off the bottom after the 1-0 defeat.

The Lilywhites were the only side in the top four going into Saturday's matches to win, with Wigan shocked 1-0 at home by 16th place Colchester who could thank Steve McGavin's 38th minute effort for the points.

Bristol Rovers were odds on favourites to sink lowly Scunthorpe but the Pirates had to make do with a point which keeps them in second place after a 1-1 draw, Chris Hope's 52nd minute effort cancelling out Mark Walters' 11th minute opener.

Reading's revival continued with a 2-0 defeat of promotion chasing Millwall. Phil Parkinson after 65 minutes and Nicky Forster, three minutes from time, made sure the Royals are four games without defeat.

Burnley closed the gap on the leaders with a 1-0 win at Bournemouth, Andy Payton notching his 19th of the season in the 32nd minute. Meanwhile Gillingham and Stoke kept up with the pack.

Cup giant-killers Gillingham came from behind to win 3-1 at Oldham who led through Ty Gooden after four minutes. Shaun Garnett levelled three minutes later and Barry Ashby put the Gills in front four minutes before the break. Rodney Rowe's 67th minute effort wrapped up the points.

Stoke ended a run of four matches without a win by scraping home against bottom of the table Cambridge by a 1-0 scoreline, Paul Connor's 29th minute goal giving them victory and ending United's four-match revival.

Blackpool lost at home for the eighth time as Bristol City made it eight games without defeat in a 2-1 win. Scott Murray after 21 minutes and Keith Millen after 48 sandwiched John Murphy's 42nd minute goal for 'Pool.

Adrian Littlejohn's 61st minute goal gave Bury a 1-0 win over Luton who failed to keep a clean sheet for the eighth game running.

Notts County's 2-1 win over Wrexham ensured the Welshmen dropped nearer the danger area, Alex Dyer and Andy Hughes netting before Karl Connolly managed a late consolation effort.

Oxford won 1-0 win at Wycombe to bring some relief at the bottom of the table. United ended a run of seven games without a win or a clean sheet thanks to Joey Beauchamp's 26th minute effort.

Cardiff are eight games without a win after a 1-1 draw with Brentford, who led through Mark Rowlands' effort in the 26th minute. Jason Fowler equalised for City after 59 minutes.
